We still need a p5 team, right? or is Southern miss now a p5?

Good. We need a break.

Except we aren't allowed to take a break. We'll still have to have a P5 school those two years

The first auburn I can ever remember going to as a kid was a loss to USM... 1991ish

Brett Favre ain't walking through that door.

frick you Jay Jacobs for scheduling ANOTHER shitty game.
big upside for USM and NONE for Auburn. Southern Mississippi has beaten AU before so its a legit game, but I see no upside for Auburn.

I don't mind playing Southern Miss. That is a game that has more interest than the directional schools but we should still win (although who knows). Of course as someone else posted, this game is not a power five opponent so we will still need to play against a P5 opponent those seasons.
I suspect this matchup was done to give us a "marquee" game for season ticket holders and that now we will schedule a power 5 opponent either in a neutral site or on the road. For that purpose of course it's not as good as it could be but it is better than a directional opponent for the season ticket packages.

big upside for USM and NONE for Auburn.

Well, at least it isn't Clemson.
Clemson
Penn State
Cal
Southern Mississippi
That's a pretty good lineup.

Auburn is paying usm an absurd amount for those games. I think 1.7 and 1.85

That's not an absurd amount.

Jags got paid 1m to play at tenner just a couple years ago. The premium for these guarantee games is getting redic.

The annoying thing about that amount is that we are paying this giant premium to play teams we don't even want
I wish we could stuff our OOC games with 3 P5 opponents + UAB

1. "a couple of years ago"
2. USM. USA. One of these things is not like the other.

they really are nowadays in the eyes of the committee. USM is not worth an extra 850k to play over USA. I'm sure those 0-12 seasons really solidified their prominence.
bottom line is these guarantee games have ballooned over, yes, literally a couple a years ago, 2013 I think. (or a "few" years ago for the semantically inclined). Arkansas state was getting paid 1.1m prior to the SECN and playoff(when USA negotiated it's game with UT) and is now getting in the 1.5-1.7 range. its crazy how much games are going for now.

Look past your own bias.
No, USM isn't considered a high-quality opponent.
YES, USM is considered a much higher-quality opponent than USA.

Which is why its not an absurd amount. Its the market amount.
