Seriously, would the basketball school identity better fit Auburn?

There's another thread occurring right now (roller coaster vs. consistency) regarding our football program, and some of us are coming to the realization that it just isn't a reasonable expectation to compete for NC's year in and year out—Bama being in the same state certainly plays a role (especially when Saban is there), but I also believe the size of Auburn as a school is also an influence.

However, we see several smaller schools who are hierarchically second in their state able to sustain an elite basketball program.

Would Auburn be better off as a basketball school?

Is there any chance Pearl can make this a possibility?

We haven't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2003.

We've been to two national championships in 5 years in football..

Auburn is still in Alabama. The state doesn't take basketball that seriously. Could that change? Sure. But it would be a longer evolution. Maybe if the football team sucked for an extended period, fans would turn their attention elsewhere. The "problem" is, those with the money won't let that happen. They'll always hold the belief that AU can be a consistent powerhouse and ultimately, they just like football more.

Are you not willing to think about it and have at least some discourse on the topic?

So we should give up on being great in football because we are having a disappointing year? We are one of the top 20 most winning football programs. Have won 8 SEC titles with 2 coming in past 5 seasons. This year stinks but that doesn't mean we should give up & just concede 2nd place.... Plus we are playing the toughest division in football which means you are going to have crappy seasons if you aren't at the top of your game. Even with all of our troubles we have lost all but one game by a single TD.

Football will always be the identity of Auburn as long as football is the #1 sport loved by those that live in the south

I find it especially remarkable that we've had two SEC titles and two national championship appearances when our biggest rival is in the middle of arguably it's most dominant period in history. I don't see why both sports can't just coexist. It won't hurt either to put emphasis on both sports.

Seeing a lot of dumb posting on the board lately. So many have been emasculated over our football program.

It really is. Also the Iron Bowl record is pretty impressive for AU considering that bama has had 2 of arguably the best coaches ever in CFB. Comparing it to other instate rivalries you can see that AU has held their own & we are far from a 2nd class program that needs to carve out a bball niche

AU vs Bama: 43-35-1 (Bama)
UGA vs GT: 64-40-5 (UGA)
OM vs MSU: 62-43-6 (OM)
OU vs OKST: 84-18-7 (OU)
TX vs A&M: 76-37-5 (TX)

And add in the fact that AU is only a game back ( ) of UGA in that series as well shows that throughout history Auburn has competed well in football against the big neighbor state schools. I mean are we going through a bit of a crazy patch right now? Sure but that doesn't mean we should just quit.

I do agree our bball program should be stronger but that doesn't mean we have to let other things fall aside. I have always felt that AU should at least be competitive in all 3 major sports considering the depth of talent in AL, GA & FL that is near AU's campus

OP needs to calm the melt a bit

Holy shite, were some of our fans this delusional? This is the last thing in the world you want to have as your expectations for any sports team you follow. You will be a very upset person most of the time if this is the case. Take the good with the bad and just have fun.

It must be awkward that you can't say the same for the OP.

Do you ever type anything worth reading? You're wasting the muscles in your fingers.

You're hiding behind your own vale of stupidity by just striking other threads down but never bringing any of your own thoughts to the table.

Please type something insightful if you're capable or unplug your keyboard.

I see you have become saddened your thread was not received well. It was just a very dumb and shortsighted OP. I chose to be direct in my response and then felt the need to remind you in my second response.

This will actually make it three. I would argue calling you out was very insightful.

So your 'response' was...

"Seeing a lot of dumb posting on the board lately. So many have been emasculated over our football program."

This isn't a response at all...in fact, it has nothing to do with my original post and the questions I put forth.

If you truly wanted to posit a 'direct response' it would be accomplished by saying something like "I don't think AU is fit to be a basketball school because (and then state reasons)"
