Obviously JJ put Gus in a bit of a bind calling the plays. Does Sean White's presence at QB put Malzahn's play-calling ability to the test? If the offense still sputters, does the blame fall directly on play-calling?

I imagine Gus will make some pretty simple calls.

Then Snowboard Cam will Tom Brady it at the line to something awesome and put the team on our back.

He is not the QB we deserve, but he is the QB we need.

this is what I am scared to death of Gus going super conservative and not giving him chances to make plays down the field

As the poster below you said, I am a bit afraid of this, too. Sean White has to know a significant amount of the playbook by now. He seems like he reads the defense pretty well, so maybe he will be a good read-option candidate.

I'd like to see Gus come out in the first quarter and ease him into the role instead of trying to do too much at first. I'd like to see some short routes and quick passes, ala short slants and quick outs. Mix in a few screens and give the ball to Barber.

I can't wait to watch a pass over the middle and not have my butthole pucker.

I think White is a better fit for the type of play calling Gus has used this season so far. Plus holding him in the pocket isn't going to hold half his abilities back like it does JJ.

watching his old highlight reels, he can pump fake, knows how to check down, and is good at feeling pressure and getting away. We will be fine. Nerves might get him in the first Q but should settle in.

If he works out it will be nice to see our offense with an accurate game manager for a change. A QB like Bama, UGA, and even USCe have been used too in recent years.

I figure we are probably fricked Sat.

This is not good news. It may be the right decision that will pay dividends later, but it also means JJ is so fricking bad and showing no signs of life, that Gus had to throw in the towel here.

Again, I am not saying it is a bad decision. What I am saying is when you throw a redshirt freshman into his first collegiate start against an SEC West opponent (that kicked our arse last year BTW), it is a desperate move.

And it isn't like we have a defense worth a damn.

IMO, Gus doesn't have the luxury of letting White just be a game manager. Our defense is very likely to get its arse kicked by Dak regularly Saturday, meaning White is going to have to make plays out of the gate just to keep the ball game close.

In that case I'd tell Barber to get ready for alot of carries.

He might have to complete a couple before the muscle memory wears off

He can scramble, and everything ive seen on him says he can feel pressure well. our OL is good enough that he probably won't even have to run unless its by design or he sees an easy 1st down. Aside form that he already had the mechanics in HS, watch some vid, he's always looking 1 way then throwing the other, i think hes gona mind frick some MSU defenders and our receivers are gona have a huge day.

ETA:: best thing i notice is he seems to be able to put arch on his throws but they still cut through the air like a rocket. rly good overhead motion?

Well, I'm going to contradict myself a bit, but I agree. While I don't think our defense is good enough for White to just be a game manager and us win (he is going to have to make plays), I do believe we have enough skill position players in the backfield and at receiver, for Gus to be creative enough in the first half to move the ball and score some points with power runs, toss sweeps, WR handoffs, quick screens, etc. And we need to play ball control to protect our weak defense.

Sooner or later though, White is going to have to make plays downfield Saturday. Oline better come to play and give him a shot.

I'm not saying we can't beat MSU at home, I figure it is still close to 50/50. I'm just pointing out this is a desperate move. You don't do something like this if you can avoid it. Obviously, Gus decided it had to be done though.

frick all this. I hope we come out of the gate wanting blood on offense...think the first half of the iron bowl last year. Gus was finally not holding back, and unleashed some pretty crazy shite. That's what our offense needs to be about. Our defense is going to give up 20+, it's a given. Our offense with Sean White should not give an absolute flying frick, and play lights out.
