There seems to be this belief by the Auburn fanbase that "Jetgate" was an elaborate ploy by the "Good ol' Boys" ("tGoB") to fire a "good" coach over personal differences. The "tGoB" may have been looking for reasons to dismiss Tubz, but let's not pretend that Tuberville didn't provide plenty of them

Fun Fact :
**** Tuberville is responsible for both home losses vs Ole Miss****

JetGate Timeline

- JetGate occurred Thurs, 11/20/2003
- Iron Bowl occured Sat, 11/22/2003

Tuberville Auburn Resume Pre Jetgate
1999: 5-6
2000: 9-4
2001: 7-5
2002: 9-4
2003: 6-5 (Pre IB)

Narrative Leading into "JetGate"

Preseason
Preseason AP #6, #1 SEC school, received a 1st place vote

Auburn was expected to compete for a national championship and was only SEC team ranked in the top 10 nationally

Start of Season

Game #1: L 0-23 v #8 USC - #6 Auburn is shut out at home vs USC
Game #2: L 3-17 @ Unranked GTech - Auburn loses by 14 to unranked Georgia Tech

*** A team expected to compete for a national title not only gets shut out at home but then loses a consecutive game vs unranked Georgia Tech

Down the stretch

After righting the ship w quality wins v ranked TN/Arky (Finished #15/UNR respectively), Tuberville ranked #17 (5-2, 4-0 SEC) wrote Malzahn's playbook of looking poised to make a run to SECCG after stumbling out of the gate....

Game #8: L 7-31 @ #9 LSU: Tuberville adds his 3rd double digit L of the season

Game #10: L 20-24 v #20 Ole Miss: The only AU coach to lose to Ole Miss in Auburn, AL is Tuberville... he's done it twice

Game #12: L 7-26 @ #7 UGA: Tuberville now adds his 4th loss by double digits w/ this against UGA

People warp their memories to make something more of Tubs than he ever, ever was for some reason.

I'll agree. Tubs is great guy and I have zero issues with him but he and his staff would take month off each year to go hunting and then he would put his name out for every job opening to leverage more money for him or his assistants. It drove me nuts every year.

I'm not going to argue with his 2004-2007 stretch, heck even 2000-2007 looks alright with some hiccups in 01/03

People are crazy though if they think 99-03 Tuberville was unfairly about to be Jetgated. Tuberville was pulling the same schtick as Malzahn right now without a SECCG to his name

Our only crime was how it was handled. We should of canned Tubs, but waited until after the season.

Tuberville took over a program completely devoid of talent and gave us our best 4 year run in history (41-9 from 2004-2007), 6 straight wins against Alabama, and IMO the best Auburn football team of all time in 2004. He deserves a special place in Auburn history for accomplishing more than most Auburn coaches with the exception of Pat Dye and Shug Jordan.

Tuberville started with way less than Gus. Gus had basically players he recruited to run his system on offense right from the start. We were also only 2 years removed from a NC to help with recruiting.

This thread isnt trying to tarnish Tubz/ compare to Gus. He is an important figure in our history

The thread was made to dispel this ludicrous notion that Jetgate was all about the "Good Ol' Boys" trying to frick up a good thing.

There was nothing to suggest in 03 that Tuberville was going to be anything better than a 7-9W coach

I'm glad he got the chance to prove them wrong

I am assuming you were of age to watch those games and remember the era. USCw was the same as Bama back then -- they had a dynasty and dominated everyone. They won the MNC in 2003 and 2004 (later retracted due to cheating).

Yes, getting shut-out was bad, but it isn't like we got shut-out by Ole Miss or MSU at home.

I never understood why they all hopped on a jet to tickle his balls. Lots of other indiscriminate ways to tell someone you're interested rather than fueling up an airliner. I might be forgetting some details though.

2003 was a bad year but one year later in 2004 that team reached its full potential with some great games and players. Jason Campbell wasn’t ready in 2003. Au played good in California against a stacked USC team that year but I was at the collapse at GT the next week. I was so butthurt over that stupid loss

You might be thinking about '02 when we played them close in LA. The shutout happened in Auburn.

I like seeing Auburn play in California. I can't wait until our home and home with Cal. I'm about duck of these promotional kickoff games in neutral locations too. I want to see us do more home and home. I wish we played a game at Washington.

Tubs could take a bunch of 3 star recruits and develop them into 4-5 star talent, on the other hand Gus gets 4-5 star recruits generally regress under his coaching.
