A lot of people are saying fire Gus, but keep Steele and the defensive staff.

Are there any examples of schools that fired a head coach and a new coach (not interim) has kept existing staff? It seems like in most cases a new head coach wants to bring in his own people.

It is very difficult to do that... I cannot think of an example of that happening. They sometimes keep one or two coaches to aid with player transition. Travis Williams might get to stay. On offense they are all gone.

LSU in 2005 when Les Miles got hired, but Nick left and wasn't fired.

Of course, officially Dye "resigned under pressure". Just like Tubs.

I would assume the new coach would interview staff that he feels would fit in his coaching staff. I think Gardner and Williams would definitely be a possibility. With the way Steele has performed, he might also.

For arguments sake, let's say Gus is fired tomorrow. New coach is hired. What DC are we going to get that's better than what we have now? Replace Garner with a better recruiter? Can't say Travis Williams has done a bad job, Hell our LBs haven't looked this good in 10 years.

It would suck to lose the defensive staff, but the waffle house retard has to go. Or we'll just continue to see good defensive play wasted. Which is weird to say, cause it used to be: "if only we had even an average defense."

I hate to lose that staff, but I'd give any of them up at this point if it meant replacing Gus.

I like Steele and think he has done a great job at Auburn. But... He was dealt a pretty awesome hand as far as personnel thanks to Muschamp and T-Rob. It's hard to get a good read of his ability.

The irony is, we fire Gus, offense immediately improves. New coach cleans house and our defense regresses.

Nope.

Clean house.

No coach in their right mind would take the AU job if we told them they had to keep certain people. Plus that is a recipe for disaster.

I am a very strong proponent of giving a head coach absolutely 100% reign on all hires, schemes, recruiting, all of it. They need the space to make the decisions they feel they need to create a great team, and everybody knows where the blame is to be laid if they don’t live up to that standard. Starts and ends with the head coach.

Unfortunately, that means I also support losing some or all of the defensive staff if the head coach thinks it is the best way forward. That should come with the territory when we talk about getting a new head coach

I am of the same mindset. Hate to lose someone good, but if a man's job is on the line to produce he should have 100% control who works for him, and control of other facets of the program.

So in an effort to save cash and hire someone, it seems like the answer is simple. Give Gus a dead headset from now on.
