LB7 posted on the bunker some tidbits from when he attended practice the other day. I'll post some of his posts....

________________
I feel much better about our defensive line next year. I had an opportunity to watch practice yesterday. Watched all drills and then the younguns went full speed at the end. I spent most of my time watching the DL. But first, a few things.

The biggest problem we have on offense is which 5 will play OL next year, because we have 8 that can play. So, it's a good problem to have. I believe you'll see Coleman hold down the LT spot. He is really improving and will be much better next fall. I think Kozan and Smith will be the guards and Golson will be our center. Avery Young will play RT. That is possibly 5 OL that will be drafted. Danzey, Diamond and Miller, IMO, are the first 3 backups.

Tony Stevens looked good. Myron Burton high points the ball better than anyone. I still think Barber will be the guy at RB. It's inevitable. JJ has a cannon. Needs to get his footwork down, but dang, he can spin it.

Now for the defense. Justin Thornton has a long, long way to go. He is skinny, for a basketball player, much less an SEC DE. That was the biggest let down of the day. I don't see him contributing next fall unless he makes major changes. On the flip side, Kennion looked really good. He is bigger than I thought. Needs to get bigger up top, but he has a great base. He will contribute if he stays healthy through spring. Andrew Williams was the biggest surprise. Whoever said he was stiff got some bad info. He his huge in his rear and legs, has a great first step. He looked good, real good. I do believe he ends up inside and he will contribute next fall and play well. The other big surprise was Dontarious Russell. Huge rear and legs. He will push for the DT spot opposite Adams. He is ready now, physically. Anyone that was worried about those two, need not. I watched E. Daniel. He will play the same roll next fall. Outside and move inside when needed. Tray Matthews is awesome. Period. Stephen Roberts is a player. Didn't see much of anyone else.

JR certainly can be a monster. But I'll say it this way without being ugly. Jovon will need to pick it up and work.. He desperately needs a great winter workout.

Don't count on Thornton next year.

Williams looks more like a DT now.

Honestly, I watched the DL bc that was our biggest concern. Lawson still looks good. In the scrimmage, D Davis was violent at LB. Harding looked good. Bigger than I expected.
_________________________

These are educated guesses.
I'm not even sure Duke will play in the bowl game, so I have no idea if he's coming back.
Lamberts rehab will determine that. He'll probably stay at end and move around. Lawson and Kennion will play Buck. Or Cowart if we get him.
Jones and one of Ruffin, Roberts (getting a look), Davis or signee.

LET ME CLARIFY

Jovon may be the next Bo Jackson. He may rush for 2,000 next fall. It's not necessarily his weight. This is a juco thing. He needs to decide at some point is he going to work and practice hard. Im sure since he is not playing in the bowl game that he is coasting right now, but that's a red flag. He may come back in January and be the leader of the pack. But it didn't start good. I'm leaving it at that. Barber, I guess, is just my guy. I just think it's inevitable bc of his size and strength. I don't see Roc carrying it 30 times a game and handling that kind of punishment. He stays bumped up.

The scrimmage was young DL against young OL, so the notes on Williams and Russell are based on those. However, my opinion is looking at their size, shape, condition, first step, work ethic, attitude and how hard they got after it. They both appear to want to be good.

I'll repeat this. Tray Matthews is good.

Golson is big. He is a legit 6'4" and 305. Taller and bigger base than Reece.

Good to hear about Tray. We need major help back there. Sounds like he is not wanting to say much about the WR's. That worries me. A little early on JR. Let him adjust to the talent. If he is still like this in the summer, he'll probably end up at HB. Not really a problem; we are loaded at RB.

LB7 pointed out that he was only focusing on DL really because that was the primary concern that he had. So I wouldn't take it as anyone being worried about the WR.

I've heard from 2-3 people close to the program that have said that JRs hunger and drive isn't what it was last year or when he showed up at Auburn last time. He REALLY needs to get it in gear, particularly in regards to S&C.

few more notes from another poster:

I'll piggy back on LB7s statements a little with what I've seen and heard over the last week , this isn't coach speak or speculation.
1-Matthews may be the biggest impact guy in Boom's D next year, safety play is so vital in what he does, and TM has him excited.
2-the OL depth going in to next season is as good as it's ever been at AU, Carr may be closer to being physically ready to contribute than anyone thought.
3-Kennion and Russell are future studs, after another off season of Russell they will be top tier come August IMO
4-Jovon has come in with a very entitled attitude, the same one he demonstrated this year at GMC and the next 6'months will be a crucible for him, he could be Ronnie Brown, or he could be Michael Burks----I agree with LB7 that Barber is closer to being the guy than anyone else, hell I thought he would be after this past spring
5-Tony Stevens and Melvin Ray will be potent
6-Another future impact LB is needed in this recruiting cycle
7-the length and ability of the young DBs is good, i think that group takes a big step forward next year

Who is LB7? What kind of relation does he have with the team? He seems to always have good info but just curious why

quote:

Andrew Williams was the biggest surprise. Whoever said he was stiff got some bad info.

His listed weight never really jived with what I heard about him. If he was at 255ish, it was at almost 0% BF. I was told that Andrew Williams had Dee Ford's work ethic in the weight room from HS and to expect him to always be near his peak athleticism due to it (I assume his nutrition matches up like Ford's did)

quote:

Kennion looked really good. He is bigger than I thought.

I saw Kennion at the basketball game a week or two ago. He looked a lot bigger than when I saw him arrive for his OV last year. I wouldn't be shocked if he is an impact pass rusher at DE that isn't expected

Also Lanier, you should invite Andrew Williams to go fishing with you. He is really into fishing and during his OV at Malzahn's house pretty much spent his entire time fishing in his pond.

He mentioned Burton, and I have also heard that he looks good. Will contribute a great deal next year, and beyond IMO. Hard worker and is physical.

Hopefully JR gets it in gear, but if not, it isn't like he is our Obe Wan Kenobi. (Only hope)

I think Coleman still has a pretty high ceiling. I remember towards the end of the season someone mentioning that he's still not got as much in tank due to the cancer treatments. He's come a long way but his overall stamina should keep increasing. I think that's a big reason he started to fade as the season progressed.

That's troubling to hear about Jovon though. Hopefully he gets his act together. Otherwise I can see it being the Peyton and Roc show. I think Roc will end up being a better and more versatile version of Grant, minus all of Grant's open field speed.

Coleman is just behind from not playing. I expect him to take a big leap next season.

Great read. So excited to see Tray out there. I almost forget he is on the team sometimes. He and Rudy could make for a really potent safety combo.

I'm not worried about Coleman. I remember Greg struggled mightily his sophomore year and everyone thought he was a bust. One year later and he's the number 2 pick. As for Jovon, I wouldn't be too worried about him either. He won't get away with minimal effort and play so he'll figure it out one way or another.

My only issue about Coleman is that I worry his stamina through the season may be a concern. I just don't know if he has the ability to maintain it even with a lot of work. Hopefully improved technique will help cover some of the issues
