I look at what I think makes great teams and defense is always where it begins for me. I love to watch a dynamic offense and having someone like Cam or NM made things exciting. I still think that lights out defense makes so much possible. I want to see Auburn go back to defense first mentality and it will be pure magic when Gus has the right offense to work his magic. And when he doesn't we can avoid looking like idiots. I just don't think a defense that keeps Auburn one score ahead in a shootout will be successful for the program to be a force in the SECW every year.

What do you think?

Nah. We have had more success with offense.

I want a lights out offense and a solid defense.

Top 5 offense with a top 40 defense would be great.

depends on the roster.

For Auburn under Malzahn, I think having an opportunistic defense and great offense is optimal......but damn our roster is becoming quite attractive on the defensive side.

I agree Malzahn is best with a super offense, and when the parts are there it is all you need. I want that lights out defense year in and year out to keep us from falling on our arse like last year. Also it let's gus do more with less on offense on off years. If that defense last year had been top 15 we would have won 10 games even with the shite show we had on offense. I believe "offense wins games, defense wins championships" wholeheartedly.

I think it also leads to the question is it easier to build a solid defense than it is to build a Malzahn offense?

Any seasoned Auburn fan knows the frustration of not winning close games where our defense was outstanding but our offense was average to below average. I wouldn't trade 2010 or 2013 for '87-'89. This is coming from someone that played defense at that level.

I will give you that for sure! But I don't think last year's offense would have looked as bad with more defensive help. I have faith that Gus can mad scientist a win in a low scoring game with less than stellar players better than trying to match scores with no defense. And 2013 would have been less exciting but much easier on my heart with a tad more D.

Our defense kept us in games last year, you must have watched something different than I did. Our O didn't produce and most of our failings on D, could be squarely on the O's lack of production. If we had a pulse on offense, we would have won 9+ games last year.

I think this is key as well.

Having a really good defense consistently would help for the years when the offense doesn't have the firepower to carry us. I think that is why Gus has focused so much on recruiting well, defensively.

Slacker - That was not a good defense for the full season even though they improved and stayed with it. LSU sticks out the most to me. They had good moments and I know they would have been better at full strength and all healthy, but the days of letting defense recruiting take a back seat to offense need to stop. I feel much better about this year and out offense question marks knowing our defense should be solid and possibly great. If the offense is solid and possibly great the sky is the limit.

Truth be told you need both to win a championship. You also need both to win consistently.

What are you talking about? We've never signed more O than D players with Gus as HC. If anything, offensive recruiting has taken a slight backseat to defensive recruiting since Gus has shown up.

Total Commits by O/D:
Offense: 42
Defense: 48

Commits per class

2013- Off - 10 Def- 11
2014- Off - 10 Def- 14
2015- Off - 13 Def- 13
2016- Off - 9 Def- 10 (Manning/Broham not counted)

Even by top end talent defensive usually is better than offense

How many of our top 8 recruits played O v D by class

2013- Offense: 3 Defense: 5
2014- Offense: 3 Defense: 5
2015- Offense: 3 Defense: 5
2016- Offense: 5 Defense: 3 (depends on Landon Rice position0

I stand corrected on recruiting. Then we need a coach that can do something with defensive recruits and we need him to stay put and build something.

With an Offensive guy as HC, you can't have both a coach who "can do something with def recruits" and "stay put and build something"

Any coach good enough to do something with defensive recruits in a spread/HUNH type system will get multiple HC offers and won't stay. Anyone who is staying to build something as just a DC isn't an elite level coach.

You either risk & get a guy who is good enough to get HC offers like Muschamp or you settle for a "meh" DC who is going to stick around like EJ or Steele

I honestly think I will take meh and stick around over a one and done Muschamp. I really need Steele to be competent enough to use the talent he has and continue to be stable for years to come. With that we have that real defense we need to keep us competitive every year. The coaching roller coaster is killing us.
