Gus called a good game against an over matched opponent. I fear against more talented teams he will feel the need to be overly creative and add a bunch of "wrinkles."

So, do you think the play calling Saturday was a sign that Gus extracted his head from his arse or that he just didn't think he needed wrinkles to beat Arky lite?

If Gus cannot see how effective that play calling was, regardless of opponent, then he needs to be committed.

I'm really not sure. My hope is that the Clemson game plan was a teaching moment that wrinkles do not work. Seems that he learned that lesson.

How can he watch that Clemson tape and think Johnson or JF have earned additional touches?

I believe you are over-thinking things. Gus saw an offense that worked Saturday. And I'm not a huge Gus fan.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that Gustav is still a relatively new college coach. He's still got a lot to learn but he's accomplished so much in his short stint.

Yep, a lot of people fail to see that. This is why I hope Gus does well enough this year to keep his job. Bc that means he's trending upwards and he's getting closer to his coaching prime. Once/If Gus matures he'll be special and give Auburn some stability for a loooong time.

Gus can call some of the best games I've seen and some of the worst games. The 2014 UGA game and this years Clemson game were two of the worst-called games I've ever seen. The LSU game in 2014 and the Iron Bowl in 2013 were two of the best called I've ever seen. So we'll just have to see which Gus shows up.

Wrinkles are generally good. They keep defenses from knowing what you're going to do.

Problem is, what Gus did week 1 was not wrinkles. It was massive crazy mad scientist experiments.

I think a lot of this stuff comes down to confidence. If Gus feels he has the players who can execute, he can be creative/aggressive. But last year, with the offense being so fricked up because of Johnson, it was timid all along.

I feel like with White now establishing himself, we can get some momentum.

I am still worried about our red zone play. Both the play calling and Whites total melt down once we get in there.

Id also like to see some more pass rush from our ends early in the game. I watched the game yesterday and focused on Lawson. If you think he is getting double teamed on every play, you are probably going to be disappointed. He is not Just getting blocked. More playing time could help him....

But other than that, we are progressing nicely

Many teams run quick passes.

They get the ball out in less than 3 seconds.

Sacks are harder to get in that setting.

2 of White's TD passes were from the 24 and 29 yd lines. And he missed another wide open receiver. To me that looks like improvement in ~red zone play calling and execution. But I'm an optimist.

Pettway's emergence as a physical runner between the tackles will help as well.

I agree he still had some shaky throws, but he is going to get it right. I think red zone is still going to be tough and the KJ wildcat is not the answer as it is just too obvious.

KJ wildcat in the redzone seems to work though.... even a good defense like Clemson couldn't stop it.

On the re-watch, Carl played solid, but seemed indecisive and a step slower than normal. I'm not sure if the injury has slowed him a bit or if them running the zone read at him caused him to be on his heels. Also, Marlon Davidson looked incredible. I focused on the lines when I re-watched the game and he stood out above all others to me.

I didn't really get a chance to watch closely, but I wonder about this as well.

You've heard the expression, when a guy comes in as a first-year player and looks overwhelmed, but then gradually starts making more and more plays, the coaches say "the game slowed down for him"?

I'm concerned that, since missing all of '14 and the injury against the 'Ville in '15, that the game has "sped up" for CL. He certainly hasn't played with the kind of quickness that he displayed late in '13.
