Jeremy Johnson, QB, Auburn -- Johnson is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback with a cannon for an arm and excellent running ability. Last we checked, Gus Malzahn did pretty well with that combination, and Johnson is a perfect fit for the Tiger scheme.
LINK

And for a bit of reference, from the class of 2007:
quote:

Cameron Newton, Florida - Newton is an amazing athlete at 6-foot-4, 232 pounds. He is the perfect fit for Urban Meyer’s spread offense and I think he’ll be the back up to Tim Tebow next season and, once he becomes the starter in a couple years, he’ll put up huge numbers for the Gators. He has the arm to make all the throws and the running ability to make defenses pay. Florida fans should be excited, because players like him don’t come around very often. Expect for him to make a run at the Heisman in 2010.

and 2010:
quote:

Cameron Newton, QB, Auburn–I was a big fan of Newton’s game when he went to Florida and I’m still high on him as he heads to Auburn. If he wins the starting job, he’ll throw for a lot of yards and touchdowns for the Tigers and could end up being one of the better quarterbacks in the SEC.

That being said, they had this to say about everyone's favorite Mocha Nightmare coming out of high school:
quote:

Kiehl Frazier, Auburn–This is the next great Tiger quarterback. He’s not a physical phenom in the mold of Cam Newton, but he’ll be a three-year starter for Auburn and by his junior year should be one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He’s equally good running or passing and he’s a tremendous leader. What more do you want in a quarterback? He’ll put up some fantastic numbers for Gus Malzahn and, because of having more time in the system, should be the all-time Auburn passing leader before he’s through.

I'm not big on Frazier either however I am interested to see what he does now that Gus is back.

Wow if I was to literally describe the anti-Frazier it would be this exact set of words. Even people that still think he can pan out have to admit his leadership is terrible.

I feel like JJ is coming out of Carver-Montgomery having played tougher competition than Frazier did at Shiloh Christian. Maybe that will help him.

I think we get a lot of coach speak leading up to the fall but ultimately the job goes to JJ. It would be so nice to have a 4 year starter.

They didn't take Nick Marshall for shits and giggles. He will most likely be the guy if Wallace or Frazier don't beat him out for it. I would guess that JJ won't start for at least two years.

Really? Given our QB situation? Not attacking you, just interesting to hear... JJ has all the size and tools to compete and play as a freshmen. There were several big time schools after him, I doubt he would have been so solid to AU if he had the slightest idea he may redshirt or be 3rd on the dt.

IMO

JJ
Marshall
Wallace
Frazier
Jason Smith (Will be playing wr unless we need a 4th string qb)

I think JJ redshirts this year and one of Marshall, Wallace and Frazier starts this year. I don't see any of them leaving early or transferring and whoever wins the spot this year will be there for a couple years.

No matter how you chalk it up, a true freshman at quarterback in the SEC is a bad idea. Wallace got a lot of reps so he is familiar with the speed of the game, Frazier got a lot of reps so he is familiar with the speed and Marshall has been in the SEC before on the other side of the ball. I don't expect Frazier to miraculously turn everything around but Malzahn's offense is dumbed down and doesn't require a lot of reads so I think he might step up and take the spot.

The only problem with this is if Frazier or Wallace start and do decent to sub-par we'll be in the same situation again next year. We'll be faced once again with the decision to start a Freshmen recruit, JJ who has no experience, or Frazier or Wallace who are "decent".

Marshall
Wallace
Frazier

Johnson (RS)

This is my opinion. Johnson might start next year depending on how well Marshall plays.

Like I said, this is a different system that doesn't require the tough reads that they were trying to force on them last year. Frazier grew up in the read system like this one so I wouldn't be shocked to see him come to life now that Gus is back with him unless he is just broken at this point, it could honestly go either way with him. Wallace has heart and talent. He was forced to throw the ball really fast due to poor line play last year and a lot of blitzing. The fact that he didn't give up to the end of the year means a lot to me and says a lot about him.

Marshall is the wild card and I really know nothing about him except he is a hell of an athlete that threw a ton of picks last year.

It really surprised me to hear Gus speak so highly of Marshall's throwing ability during the presser this afternoon. I've only seen him throw 2 or 3 passes.

Some people I've talked to in the AD think that Marshall is the real deal and will come in and start. I brought up Wallace starting (because frick the Mocha Nightmare) and it was dismissed in favor of Marshall.

JJ needs to work with Lashlee on mechanics

Hate to hear that for Wallace's sake, but if Marshall can actually come in and take the starting role from him, then that makes me a whole lot more confident about this offense going into next year.

I'm not saying Cam Newton-level, but surely we'll be able to pull off an O better than 2009. A lot of these guys know Gus' system already, they're his recruits, ect...

I'm taking the "casually optimistic" route for the defense. Hopefully Lawson can start day one and Adams & Daniel end up in the 2 deep before too long.

Marshall is a more realistic starter than JJ... Marshall played against much tougher competition last year in the Kansas JUCO ranks (top JUCO league in the country). His upside is really high, if you think about it... he's only been a college QB for one season (played special teams at UGA as a frosh).

Marshall's athleticism makes him an intriguing QB prospect... and his high school numbers were impressive.

Doesn't Marshall run a 4.4 40 or something crazy like that for a QB?

I'm just hoping for mediocre with steady improvement through out the year.
