Well, this changes things a good bit if true.

ALEXANDER CITY, Alabama -- Slain Auburn University football player Jakell Mitchell was armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with the man accused of killing him at a Dec. 14 off-campus party, an Auburn police detective says.

Detective Dustin Holt said in a Monday morning court hearing that witnesses saw Mitchell with a gun during an argument with Markale Hart, 22, at the Tiger Lodge apartments in Auburn.

Did they not find a gun at the scene?

dayum. al.com said the Mitchell was going to kill the dude he was arguing with. That sure does change facts.

One of our friends down there whose son lives at those apartments said there was MUCH more to this story.....they said it had something to do with his supposed "girlfriend". Just gossip but now that this has come out it does seem to line up with what they were saying.

Take that with a grain of salt... it came from the defendants lawyer... of course he's gonna say self defense or whatever.

Eta: I'm not saying he didn't have a gun, but I seriously doubt the killer feared for his or his friends life.

That is some speculation. Defense attorney is trying to build that case up.

Not saying he didn't go all Aaron Hernandez but he put an entire clip into Mitchell. Doesn't seem like "self defense"

This was my first thought as well.

self-defense or not, it's the detective saying Mitchell had a gun (at least that's what witnesses saw), which does change things.

When you are afraid, or adrenaline is going, your initial reaction will be to empty your mag. I had this problem when I was younger when hunting. I would put 4-5 shots on a deer before I knew it.

no doubt, but it reads like the detectives are saying witnesses are saying JM had a gun... but maybe i'm wrong.

you would've thought this info would've come out when it went down... which makes me a little skeptical.

And our fans will be the ones who take the story 100x farther than it would go anywhere else. smh

That is a scary thought. Anyone using a firearm should have more control over themselves than that. Deer or in supposed self defense.

That is what it says, but this was just a bond revocation and those witnesses don't appear to have testified or been cross examined. Remains to be seen if those witness were there with the shooter and have questionable credibility or if they were independent. Also, there is no mention of recovering another weapon or other shell casings.

Poor job reporting and drafting a headline, IMO. These types of questions need to be asked and reported on, or at least referenced in the article.

If the detective is saying he had a gun, it's different than the defense attorney saying it. If he did have a gun, it seems like they should have found it on his body at the crime scene. Is there anything saying they didn't find Jakell's gun at the scene?

This further goes to show we need to hold back comments until we know the full story.

It worries me that we recruit players who have the potential to have this happen to them...and this isn't the first time.

what do you suggest we do?.... quit recruiting opelika? That's stupid... and it's not like mitchell didn't have legit offers from other SEC teams, including alabama.

making some bigger picture statement about this unfortunate incident is misguided, imo.
