Yes, that Jake Spavital.. The one that coached Johnny Manziel at TAMU and Brandon Weeden at Oklahoma St.

Spivital has worked under Sumlin, Holgerson, and Dykes. Most importantly though he worked with Gus Malzahn and Herb Hand at Tulsa.

Cal has promoted him to temp HC but cmon... They're going to hire Chip. That leaves Spavital without a job

This should be a no brainer. Fire Lashlee right now bring in Spavital and give him full control of the offense.

If you don't....you'll be looking for a job this time next year.

Spavital + Stidham 2017 Make Auburn Great Again

So what exactly would he bring to the table outside of coaching Manziel?

Serious question.

I'm glad you asked...

He also broke records with Brandon Weeden and Geno Smith

quote:

While at West Virginia Spavital coached Geno Smith. Under Spavital's coaching Smith would break numerous West Virginia, NCAA, and bowl records.

quote:

Spavital helped teach the new offense to QB Brandon Weeden, who was nearly two years older than Spavital. That season, Oklahoma State went 11-2 and Weeden was third in the nation in yards per game and total yards as well as sixth in the nation in touchdowns

I don't know much about his team at CAL but just looking at their schedule..

They scored 40+ 8 times this season 3 of those being 50+

coaching Manziel?

He inherited a Heisman winner, Kliff Kingsbury gets most of the credit

He was a GA at Oklahoma St..... so he is like Scot Loeffler coaching up Tom Brady as a GA?
quote:

Geno Smith

Under Dana Holgerson who is heavily involved in coaching QBs in his personal variation of the Air Raid

Spavital has experience learning from good QB coaches and around prolific passing offenses, probably would be a decent hire for what we need.

Let's not think that Spavital is some transcendent OC though

After Ellis Johnson I just assume high-profile coordinators will let us down when we make the splash hire.

He wouldn't be a bad hire, but you pumped him up to 2012 Scot Lolfler status

He had Davis Webb at Cal, the guy Auburn wanted as a graduate transfer.

SOME of us did. There was a large group that didn't. Just like there was a group that didn't want Russell Wilson or Clint Trickett.

6th Davis Webb thread.

Seriously if Rhett moves on Gus will promote Kodi to OC.

There is no need to make a change at OC unless it is for a big name.

I'm not advocating for Rhett, but who would you consider a big name?

I am in the minority, but I don't have any issues with RL. Gus is the head coach. All blame/praise should be directed to him.
