Heard he did very well in the Saturday Scrimmage. I have been pulling for him and liking his style for two years. Will we finally get to see him get some substantial playing time and show what he can do.

I still think Roc is going to be the guy.

I hope so. He's certainly runs low and finishes strong. Very disappointed he didn't get many touches last year.

Have the opinions on Robinson changed? He was so hyped up, then people began saying he looked a little flat at spring practice...like he lost the fire he once had in HS.

Some were saying he could be close to Bo Jackson caliber.

No we to that. I have never had an opinion on Robinson because he has not played. He may be awesome and I think he will be the guy that gus uses. He is a up the middle back and that is what we need. Not sure Roc can be that guy

Barber on the other hand has looked pretty good as well. Just wondering if he could be better than some expect. I guess it depends on his pass blocking..

I am a big P Barber fan and he is the hardest runner of the backs IMO. Roc has the moves and runs like Caddy. Jovon is a combo of both. Better Power than Roc but does not have as good of move as Roc. He have more moves that Barber but not as much power. We are in great shape at RB.

I really like Barber when I have seen him run. I also like the fact that he seems to be humble and has kept working to be the back.

I also like Roc and Jovon. It's a great problem to have, but you hope they all get their chance to produce and show what they can do.

I'm telling you I am getting so amped up for this football season. I just feel we have the talent and ability to do something big as long as all the other things go our way as well. Health, calls that go our way, turnovers, etc.

Roc = Caddy/Kenny Irons
Barber/Jovon = Brown

Would y'all want to see one of the backs get the majority of the carries like with Tre in 2013 or see the carries get spread out over the three guys?

I'd prefer to play them all a little at the beginning and see who shows the most in-game potential and then stick with one back throughout. I think that was key to Tre's success in 2013. His consistent carries allowed him to get into rhythms with the o-line, and this went on each game with hardly any interruption.

That seems to be how Gus and Lashlee do things. See who is the most consistent and then use the others in situations that call for their particular expertise.

Obviously I would love to see all three get 1000+ yards each, but ultimately I want whatever combination gets us a championship.

With the offense we run, it'll be one back getting a majority. No time for subs, when we're hitting on all cylinders on a good drive.

That's a good point. Gus does not like messing with the tempo and change something that is being successful.

I still have to think that Roc is going to be that guy until Jovon gets his feet under him, so to speak. Barber could be an animal for us, though.

It's tough because I like the idea of pounding down the defense with 3 different guys. Knock them around in the 1st quarter with Jovon. Make them chase Roc in the 2nd & 3rd. Then pound opponent into submission with Barber but I do think RBs need to get in a rhythm.

Personally I think Roc is going to be the guy this year with Barber getting 2nd carries & Jovon being the 3rd down back. I thought for sure Jovon was going to be the guy but from all reports it really seems Roc & Barber are ahead of him

If Roc can run through the tackles and hold onto the football I think it'll be him too. If not Barber seems like the guy that'll move the chains and keep drives going.

Lets just do 2013. Which is what Gus seems to do. Get a little better defense, 13 seconds better and finish what we should have finished in Pasadena.

I love having the tail back discussion because we have so many options. After rewatching all the 2013 games again over the past month or so while I have been working in the shop, I forgot how damn good Tre Mason was.

He was a work horse.

He'll make the most of his carries. How many he'll get is anybody's guess though. We have 4 guys who have the size and talent of future draft picks, and the only thing certain is Kerryon will be at the back of th line due to seniority.

Barber is a beast and would already be a star in the SEC had he signed with Ole Miss.
I hope he gets plenty of carries because I love watching him run. Always 100% effort. Shoots out of the backfield like a cannonball, and he reminds me of a bull in the open field. Violent runner, just gets low, puts his head down, and bounces off everybody and goes full speed the whole time.

But I wouldn't mind Barber or Jovon going off this year and going pro to make room in the backfield.

So was curious about carry distribution for Gus and took a quick look at the numbers

2006 Arkansas:
RB Darren McFadden 284 carries 1647 yds 14 TDs
RB Felix Jones 154 carries 1168 yds 6 TDs

2007 Tulsa:
RB Tarrion Adams 219 carries 1225 yds 8 TDs
RB Jamad Williams 106 carries 458 yds 2 TDs
QB Paul Smith 105 carries 119 yds 13 TDs

2008 Tulsa:
RB Tarrion Adams 247 carries 1523 yds 14 TDs
QB David Johnson 92 carries 186 yds 3 TDs
RB Jamad Williams 86 carries 523 yds 3 TDs

2009 Auburn:
RB Ben Tate 263 carries 1362 yds 10 TDs
RB Onterrio McCalebb 105 carries 565 yds 4 TDs

2010 Auburn:
QB Cam Newton 264 carries 1473 20 TDs
RB Michael Dyer 182 carries 1093 yds 5 TDs
RB Onterrio McCalebb 95 carries 810 yds 9 TDs

2011 Auburn:
RB Michael Dyer 242 carries 1242 yds 10 TDs
RB Onterrio McCalebb 112 carries 641 yds 5 TDs

2012 Arkansas State:
RB David Oku 243 carries 1061 yds 16 TDs
QB Ryan Aplin 104 carries 438 yds 6 TDs

2013 Auburn:
RB Tre Mason 317 carries 1816 yds 23 TDs
QB Nick Marshall 172 carries 1068 yds 12 TDs
RB Cameron Artis-Payne 91 carries 610 yds 6 TDs
RB Corey Grant 66 carries 647 yds 6 TDs

2014 Auburn:
RB Cameron Artis-Payne 303 carries 1608 yds 13 TDs
QB Nick Marshall 153 carries 798 yds 11 TDs
RB Corey Grant 60 carries 364 yds 3 TDs

Before HC @ AU his top back usually had between 240-260 carries but past 2 seasons he's gone heavy with one guy with 300+ carries. With JJ probably not running as much as Nick or Cam I think we could see more of the 2006 Arkansas or 2011 Auburn numbers

Taken from the AJC today

quote:

The Auburn Tigers need a running back.

Unfortunately, former quarterback Nick Marshall isn’t walking through the door. Neither is former running back Cameron Artis-Payne. Both were the team’s top two rushers last season.

Luckily, sophomore Peyton Barber is going out of his way to impress the eyes of the Tigers. The former Milton High School standout had a 30-yard catch and a 20-yard run in Saturday’s scrimmage. His performance has earned him praise from Auburn running back coach Tim Horton.

“He’s someone that I have a great deal of trust in,” Horton said to al.com’s Brandon Marcello. “Putting him in the game, he’s going to do great. He just needs the opportunity and he’s going to get the opportunity. He’s earned the opportunity.”

Barber saw limited action last season as freshman. He had 10 carries for 54 yards for the entire season. This year is the chance for the sophomore to break out. Auburn needs a guy to take the pressure off Jeremy Johnson, the new starter at quarterback.

Barber has all the tools to become the full-time starter. However, he will have large shoes to fill. Artis-Payne lead the team with 1608 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. Marshall contributed 798 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The duo quickly became the focal point of a dangerous rushing attack. With them, Auburn averaged 35 points per game. Their success has left lofty expectations for 2015.

In order for Auburn to compete with the SEC West, it will need Barber to lead the way. He already has won half the battle by gaining the trust of his coaches. Now he just has to prove it on the field.
