Is a good blocking FB/H-Back our "key" offensive position to being elite?

2010 Eric Smith
2013 Jay Prosch
I mean I know we had Cam in 2010, but this still supports what may be a correlation? Or am I misremembering Eric's role/performance?

I think it's more guard play than anything else. In our power wing T running scheme you must have guards that can seal/open those edge running lanes.

I think it's key to us scoring TDs in the redzone. Which really hurt this year.

True, but when Prosch was able to get to the second level and make blocks, our run game went to another level.
I think this is why Gus went out and immediately started recruiting true FB's, like Cox. I don't think he'd ever really used one before, so when he saw what a guy like Prosch can do, he saw what it can do with his offense. If I remember correctly, Smith was used more like a blocking TE, and not necessarily a FB.

Assuming your OL isn't getting their face caved in, a quality HBack is what makes 3-5 yard runs 15-20 when running up the middle.
Don't forget that when you have a dominant hback blocker, you can use him as a decoy. Worked very effectively with Prosch.

Is this kid as good as advertised? I've been told he's like a prosch clone.

No way he has prosch's size/strength as a true frosh... however he is more athletic and will be way more of a rushing/receiving threat than Porsch could ever be.
He's more Jacob Hester than he is jay prosch IMO.

Probably not, but I'm sure he'll have a role in the O next year. Give him a year or two with the S&C, and I can see him being pretty beastly. He's probably 225 now, so if he can put on 10 lbs between now and August, that would be nice. I can see him eventually playing in the 245-250 range and being very effective.

He was blowing folks up at the Army All American game. Not afraid of contact at all.

Doesn't he have pretty good hands as well?

That is the difference between him and Fulse, and incidentally what made Prosch such a terror on the field.
Can't wait.

That's why I asked about him. I don't keep up with recruiting much, this is what I had been told and was skeptical. Much like WMFC, there is only one Prosch.
