Occurred with just over 4 minutes remaining in this game:
quote:

A 3-13 A22 TEAM rush to the AU22, fumble by TEAM recovered by AU T. Robinson at AU4.
Doesn't sound like much, but under the circumstances was one of the biggest impact plays in AU history. And it quite probably prevented what would have certainly been in the top 3 worst loss lists of any AU Rantard old enough to remember it (such as yours truly).

Wish I could find video of it online, as it was a tremendous combination of athletic ability and game awareness unexpected in a true FR seeing his first action.

Rob Bironas. People forget he played here in 98.

I vividly remember the TD pass to take the lead in that game... listening to fyfe's call in my living room. Tubervilles first game. Thinking we were gonna lose and who did we just hire.

It wasn't in 98 when we opened with UVA at home... the student section was half full.

Wasn't at the game, but I was in my first semester in the engineering program...

Not sure. Just remember that the student section back then was nothing like you see now.

It felt more like an A-Day game. We sat about 20 rows up behind the goal post and had plenty of elbow room.

Student section was pretty empty that game. Almost positive school was not in, but I stayed in AU year with the exception of summer I worked in Bham, so I was there anyway.

Student section for big games was still the same as today. I remember entering the stadium to secure good seats 2.5-3 hours before big games.

Remember, we were supposed to open with FSU and Housel bought the game out for half a million to avoid having the whole Bowden fiasco thrown in our faces (and starting Tubs' career off with a blowout loss at home, as FSU would have absolutely crushed us). And the ridicule we justly received for replacing them with little Appy State (this was several years before their upset of Michigan).

We had struggled mightily all day, and the then-despised Ben Leard had taken over at QB for starter Gabe Gross and led us to the tie after having been outscored 15-0 since halfway through the 1st quarter. After a missed FG by Bironas and a couple of swapped punts, AU faced a 3rd and 13 from our own 22 when Ben Nowland snapped the ball over everyone all the way back to the 4. Somehow, with ASU defenders all over the play, T-Rob raced from his wideout position and pounced on the ball, allowing AU to avoid what would have been a devastating redzone turnover. Damon Duval managed a solid punt, the defense held on a 3rd and 2 near midfield, then Leard led the beleagured AU offense down the field for the game-winner.

None of which would have happened without T-Rob's heads-up play on the fumble.

T Rob crushed an Alabama receiver, I believe, during the same Iron Bowl that Tre Smith went beast mode.

We were still on quarters in 1999 iirc, so school was not back yet. I was at this game as a student too.

FSU won an NC in 99... Bowden would've beaten us by 100.

pretty sure auburn played down in Tallahassee that summer in a baseball regional and gross caught nine kinds of hell bc we backed out. War-chicken used to be a pretty common phrase.
