First off, you can look at our odds of winning a championship. We are decent, but do not have the overall talent of an Alabama. LSU will be tough on the road. We are thin at Safety, concerned about our pass rush, and our Oline is new. So there is reason to keep it in check.

Bottom line, I see us going 14-1 or 15-0.

Nobody in the country has the talent stockpiled like UA. You can't compare us to them. But everyone else, I think we are just as competitive. I can't think of another school I would swap with ATM.

Well, to be honest. Its more times than naut.

Honest question for Expectations Checkers:

Why?

What is the problem with being optimistic? (Even wildly optimistic if that's your thing.) Or having high expectations?

Is your psyche or are your feelings so fragile that if the actual results do not match your expectations, that you'll experience something worse than a little temporary depression or sadness?

Is that temporary depression or sadness (or something worse) absent in the cases when you "check your expectations"? Or is it still there?

Do you not possess the maturity level adequate for handling life's common, smaller disappointments if/when they happen?

I mean, for those who honestly believe, after looking at the team, that we're going to suck, I can understand that. I might (and probably will) disagree, but at least I can understand you've come to a rational determination about how you THINK the team will perform.

But I'll never understand "Oh, I'm scared to death because we're talented and we have a shot at doing well, so I'd better check my expectations now!"

Don't be naive young man. I've probably been through a lot more of these seasons than you have if not twice as many.

True enough, Alabama has the best brand in college football, in a talent rich state, a state with no big league pro sports (except NASCAR). So yeah, they're going to win because they've got tons of money, and talent coming in, and they're going to keep getting money and talent because they win; it's self-perpetuating.

When I say "brand," that doesn't mean it's a better school or program, just that it's recognized as the best. Think Coke vs. Pepsi (or Dr. Pepper). Ask most people of they want a Coke or a Pepsi, and they will say Coke, but that doesn't mean Coke is really any better.

Even with all that, we came within about a minute and a half of beating them in '09 (and wrecking a natty), beat them in '10, beat them in '13, and really should have beat them in '14. No, close and "should've" does not count, but it's not like the rivalry is uncompetitive either.

I've long thought that Auburn is blessed to be in the West: with LSU, UGA, and Bama on the schedule, the table is pretty much set every year. Granted, those may be ugly games in down years, but beat them all (or even 2 of 3) and win the rest of the games you should, and you're pretty much in.

Why?

What's going to happen to your life if the team doesn't meet high expectations?

It's fricking football. We have a lot of talent and possibilities. Might as well have fun before the season begins. Besides, it triggers the rant when you feel confident about our team. Merica!!!

Agree. The best part of the season is the hope that the beginning of the season brings. Once we play Clemson it is all over!
