Particularly because of how much FSU is paying Charles Kelly right now

Steele came in and this year (small sample size I know) we are tackling and filling gaps much better. I'm perfectly fine with that.

Thank goodness one of our coaches can call rational plays too.

And looks like he enjoys what he's doing unlike Muschamp who was checked out and job hunting most of the season.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's only coached one game, but it did look damn good.

Steele should be considered a steal...for now.

He has a lot of talent to work with up front. Doesn't take a genius to work with that.

The entire defense first had to learn basics. Which were forgotten over time since Tuberville left. Steele can only improve the team compared to how bad it was in the first place.

That was the best defensive performance I have seen in a very long time

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. It's gonna be a long year for our defense if our offense keeps playing like that.

Steele was not ever believed to be a defensive genius with great ability to react during a game. He was supposed to be a great teacher of fundamentals. He has talent this year to work with and solid recruits lined up behind them. If he can adapt a little or at least let someone call it who can, then he will be what we need.

He may need to be a great motivator if the O continues down this dark path.

Way, way, wayyyyy too early for me to be overly complimentary of Steele or any coach after just one game.

Heck, based on Gus' track record, I would say it's too early to overly compliment a coach based on just one season.

The defense was trending up last year. None of the players except maybe D Brown and M Davidson were even recruited by Steele.

Let's wait and see.

Our defense appears to have gotten back to defense 101, which was great to see: good angles, wrapping up, attacking the ball. Looking forward to watching them gel the rest of the year.

I was impressed. Tackling was vastly improved. You didn't see a lot of missed assignments. The DB's covered their man....for the most part. They just have a beast WR that killed us. That was the best D performance I have seen since the Tub's years.

Not to mention going against a Heisman worthy QB.

I've always considered Steele to be a good defensive coordinator. He'll take a bad defense and make them good, and he'll take a great defense and make them good. Everyone talks about him being a sucky coordinator because he's been taking top 10 defenses and making them worse, but they're still pretty damn good all things considered.

Honestly, he was just what the doctor ordered for Auburn. Schematically very similar to Muschamp, but can teach fundamentals (something we've badly needed since Tubbs).

I do wonder how much Steele knowing Clemson's offense played into this though. We'll see during the A&M game.

We really didnt do anything great. We just played very solid fundamentals and let the talent we have play. Thats pretty much it. We dropped a few balls that could have easily been intercepted but our cover guys were never really out of position.

Our defensive line controlled the running game and kept guys in front of them but did not really pressure Watson that much all night. But once again, fundamental defense, good tackling and not over running the plays.

There were mistakes but none were huge mistakes. A big step forward

I want to give Steele all the credit but it goes to our recruiting and I think we started to get better later in the year last year. We are still getting some of the Muschamp effect from last year in my opinion. Hopefully, Steele can keep things going.

I like what I saw but I want to see them play fundamentally sound for more than one or two weeks.

I agree, but it appears the staff did a good job preparing for Clemson, which was a tall order. There was plenty of help from the supporting cast of Garner and Williams who did very well utilizing the talent. I will say hats off to strength and conditioning because they seemed to stay fresh the whole game.
