How much of Saturday's improvement could be chalked up to MSU?

This is a point I'm struggling with. On one note, I can say 'Well, we were playing MSU...it's appropriate to beat them down like we did.'

Then on the other hand, our o-line looked fantastic (apparently we switched a few guys around), and our d-line was dominant too.

How do the other posters here feel regarding how much weight should be given to our performance over MSU?

MSU didnt have a thing to do with the play calling. we have looked tons improved in that department. we are now running serious football plays and our players look like they actually practice and understand the plays we run now. that's a shite ton of improvement over weeks 1 and 2.

at the end of the day, Mullens is an above average coach that does as well as he can in the town he is in and the talent that he has. There is a talent gap between us and MSU and we should beat them down but they also don't have a ton of guys going early so they keep leadership and that shouldn't be disregarded.

The line shifting around shouldn't be taken lightly, MSU will beat you up with solid line play and the fact that we pushed them around should be taken as a sign of improvement.

MSU is still a team that almost beat Lsu on the road.

Limited sample size for them on my behalf, but they seem like a team of two halfs. Every game they bomb one, adjust, and make a run. Not sure if that helps.

I've said this about our wins against the Sun Belt this year as well. We made an inferior opponent look like just that, and that is what good teams are supposed to do. That has not always been the case at Auburn recently. We dominated that Miss State team in the first half. If we had not completely shut it down in the second half the score could have been much worse.

We have played one of the toughest schedules in the nation so far, and have been in every game we have played, and absolutely beat down the weaker opponents we have played. And it honestly makes sense that this offense would get better as the year goes on. Sophomores at QB and RB, true freshman at WR, new pieces on the o-line that need time to gel. We were able to stick with Clemson and A&M despite the shiteshow that was our offense, and now I think things are starting to come together. I'll be excited about an Auburn win like we had Saturday against an SEC opponent no matter how bad the team is. But I'm excited about the rest of the year.

MSU is bad and we are getting better. Play calling has improved tremendously. We could still lose to any team on our schedule not named AAMU, but we have a reasonable chance to win every game as well.

I see us finishing at 8-4, with some good direction on both sides of the ball heading into the off season.

Like anything, it's a bit of both. This is not 2014/2015 MSU for sure, but they're still better than a Vandy or KY. Bottom tier of the SEC, but not the worst.

I am pleased with the win, especially being on the road at 11 AM. I wish Gus kept the foot on the gas in the 2nd half, though.

MSU is not good, but beating an SEC team by 35 in a half is very impressive. They did beat USCe and played LSU close. Considering they had beaten us 3 of the last 4 years and played us close in 2010 (17-14) and 2013 (24-20) plus who can forget 3-2 in 2008. (lost in 2012 and 2014 @ Starkville). Last time we beat them this bad was 34-0 in 2006.

I felt confident, but never expected the first half.

The first half was as dominant against an SEC opponent as we have been in well over a decade. As I recall, even the 2006 game, despite being a 28-0 final, was more of a slog, and this is a much better MSU team than that one.

If I had to rate them, I'd say MSU is probably 10th in the SEC, the best overall of the bottom tier (better than UK, Missouri, SCarolina and Vandy). I think they are superior defensively to two of our remaining SEC opponents (Arky and Ole Freeze).

The second half was some adjustment by MSU and our guys probably felt too confident and let up. By reading the player reactions I think they have learned another valuable lesson. MSU was not good, but our coaches and players did a good job handling business as they should against that caliber of team. It leaves me confident against Arky after the bye and cautiously optimistic against UGA and Ole Miss. Bama will still take a huge amount of luck and the D playing their best game at another level.

Before the game, MSU was #18 in the country in rush defense. Now, they're sitting at #32 in rush defense.

Side note, but this makes me feel much better about the Arkansas and Ole Miss games. Currently, Arkansas is #78 in rush defense and Ole Miss is #97. If White can continue to be steady so teams can't load the box, we should run all over teams with KJ, KP, and our speedsters.

Something else to think about - we crushed their run "d" behind a guy who, had there been no early entries/transfers/suspensions/injuries to our RB corp, would have come into fall practice as our 5th or 6th string tailback.
