Was watching part of the 1983 Iron Bowl online and one of the commentators said "and the Plainsmen are on the move." I knew this nickname existed but I'd never really heard it used. Was it used much back in the day? I like the sound of it. It'd be cool to see it used more.

True. Still, I'm talking more it being used as a sometime substitute for "tigers." I guess that wouldn't help the people who are already confused about the distinction between war eagle and tigers hahaha.

It's not very politically correct. I prefer the term "mountainous region challenged person"

I like it! I like to think of Plainsmen as referring to the male student body of Auburn. The Tigers are the athletes.

I think you nailed it. If not for the eagle, it would probably be used more in branding/marketing. So we just use it locally around campus for the plainsfolk

Mostly used in reference to the track team when I was at Auburn.

It was used, but mainly as a nickname..Auburn has carried the name Tigers for the entirety of their athletic history, but Plainsmen will always be a word used when referring to Auburn men (But NOT women). The school newspaper carries that name. The War Eagle girls and Plainsmen. Goes about the same as the Auburn FAMILY...

The city's unofficial nickname is “The Loveliest Village On The Plains,” taken from a line in the poem The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith: “Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plain...”

I have to say that whenever someone brings up the "which one are you" the plainsman thing is the only one i can't explain very well. I could do without it. Rename the baseball field "Bo Jackson park".

As much as I love Bo I think Frank Thomas would be more deserving of the naming rights.

Yeah, I was going to say Bo Thomas park but stuck with the Bo haha. I agree with you though.

Bo park, Thomas field, Hudson field house.

I like the Plainsmen term, but it is generally used in reference to the student body, not the sports teams.
