Do we use technology like this to monitor our players?

No, it isn't cheap and you don't really need that level of bio-monitoring in football.

Saban thinks it's necessary and his teams regularly out perform all others....perhaps there is something to it.

ETA: I seriously got a downvote for asking the question....

Nike is also sponsoring/testing it with Bama. The only time I have seen the bio-monitoring has been on soccer players reporting to camp for the first time.

Wasn't me, but who cares?

They mentioned it was to see if the players were giving 100% effort blah blah. I didn't know if it would really be beneficial for us or not. Figured I would ask.

I just get salty lol...I don't care, it just seems silly

If you really want to look into some cool football related bio monitoring, look into the research they're doing on concussions at Stanford. It's pretty awesome stuff. Here's a LINK to a Ted talk they did about it recently.

Edit: Just got done with my final so I'll summarize for anyone interested. Essentially, they're finding that the current theory on what causes concussions isn't necessarily correct. They think that damage to the wiring connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain is more likely to be what is causing the issues associated with concussions. This is caused by stretching of the brain tissue/wiring (not damage to the surface of the brain from banging on the interior of the skull). This is also consistent with brain imaging of former NFL players who developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy, where this area is severely damaged. They're working to develop a prototype that could prevent this type of motion that would work with an accelerometer in the mouthpiece which would detect when a dangerous hit has been delivered based on the movement of the skull.

Also, your kid is way more likely to get a concussion from a bike accident than football

I'm sure it's a cool feature to an 18 year old kid.

I think it probably has more to it than that......probably mind freaks them into for sure putting in 100% each and every play or something....

I seriously doubt any school would be willing to drop the kind of money it would cost to buy and maintain these things just to scare their players into giving max effort.

It is a legit motivator. They would probably only need ONE though. Put it on a recruit and let him run and say "see, we know when you are trying, it is in our best interests to get you 100% all the time so you can kick arse in the NFL" and then once they sign just put some led thing on there lol
