The other day I posted EJ's career stats as an FBS DC prior to his hiring at AU, arguing that he had a solid career and that his current performance was somewhat of an abberation. Here are those numbers again for comparative purposes:

EJ's total/scoring defense rankings since 1997:

ALABAMA
1997 #58 / #47
1998 #59 / #40
1999 #9 / #21
2000 #35 / #42

MISSISSIPPI STATE
2004 #51 / #60
2005 #29 / #44
2006 #41 / #83
2007 #21 / #35

SOUTH CAROLINA
2008 #13 / #31
2009 #15 / #24
2010 #46 / #43
2011 #3 / #11

Now here's what Muschamp has done as a DC in those two categories:

LSU
2002 #8 / #15
2003 #1 / #1
2004 #3 / #14

AUBURN
2006 #19 / #7
2007 # 6 / #6

TEXAS
2008 #51 / #18
2009 #3 / #12
2010 #6 / #49

His career-worst defense, at UTx in 2008, allowed 346 yards per game (5.26 per play) and 18.77 points per game. In contrast, AU's defense that same year (remembered as our last 'good' defensive squad) averaged 317.75 yards and 18.0 points per game, and right at a foot less per snap.

Overrated? You decide.

And he put those numbers up with Texas in the extremely offense happy Big 12 back when Big 12 offenses were still good. Those were the Sam Branford, Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, Jerry Maclin, Chase Daniel, and Dez Bryant days.

I didn't realize EJ's were as bad as they were overall. Not awful but average for the most part.

7 of his defenses since 1997 were middle of the pack or worse including his 2 years at auburn (stastically)

Because all a Malzahn offense needs is a decent defense to get a stop every so often, and we convinced ourselves that Johnson's middle-of-the-pack defense was just what the doctor ordered.

If it had actually been consistently middle-of-the-pack, it would have been more than adequate.

I'll be honest I had no idea about either. I didn't know EJ was so mediocre & statisticaly WM was so good. I stand corrected. I was skeptical of his coaching ability.
