Is it the plan to get him significant snaps this year?

Pretty difficult to say before fall practice.

He's definitely a strong candidate heading in though. If I had to guess I'd say pretty limited work early on in the season and as the season goes on he sees more action

Doubtful to be a true rotational player at DT. Ahead of him are Adams, Russell and Lawrence who all were playing well by the end of the year.

Add in additional returners like Swain, Andrew Williams and a healthy Jauntavioud Johnson and there isn't a ton of room sans injury

Might be smart to let him redshirt and reshape his body in year 1. He came in around 330 pounds and a lot of that is probably bad weight.

Dont think much of that is bad weight. Derrick Brown is a beast.

I would be surprised if Gus red shirts one of the highest DT recruits we have signed in what, a decade?

IMO, he will be in the rotation, but most of his minutes will be against lesser competition.

Don't need to be rock solid to be a beast. Just look at Charles Barkley or Vince Wilfork.

Derrick Brown clearly has some "bad weight" but he moves extremely well despite that

What do you want, a 330 lb DT with 3% body fat? gtfoutta here

To me, an example of BAD weight would be Terrance Cody. DB looks nothing like Cody

I'm willing to bet Derrick Brown won't be anywhere near 330 pounds when he receives proper training and dieting at Auburn. He will probably play around 300-310. Being 330 pounds out of high-school screams bad weight.

Nah, just saying there is no way he is 330 at even say 15-18% BF. If he was at 15% BF at 330, his 8% BF weight would be 305 and no fricking way.

Put it this way, GRob who probably is a bigger frame, weighed in at 330 at -NFL combine. There is no way a HS kid is even ballpark GRob combine good weight

No way to tell. Idle speculation by both our parts. Personally, i think he will play around 315. Either way, he has an incredible first step and is a manimal on the field. Best DT we have signed since Montravious

He definitely could be productive at this weight given his athleticism but I would bet his ideal weight right now would be ~305 and long term 315

I think he only drops to 315 come beginning of season

Monty Adams wants to drop 15-20lb to be at 295 for the season

Dont think Monty came in at 330 iirc. Monty at 290-295 is perfect....think Nick Fairley

Freshmen DT rarely make any sort of impact. I'll look forward to reading about him being a bust on this Auburn board next spring.

Let him develop and pack in good weight.

It would be nice to see him get some playing time to help with his development. We are decent at DT right now. Having him get some meaningful downs to get him ready would be great.

No way arguably the best DT from last cycle resdshirts. He'll get a fair share of snaps. I fully expect to see him game 1

Seems to me that for frosh DT the biggest issue is getting weight/strength/technique up to an SEC level, and not necessarily the mental aspect. Tell me if I'm wrong, but how much of a playbook specific to DTs can there be? I think Brown already has the measurable to play

I know a guy named Josh Chapman. He's 6'0" 330 pounds, started at NT for Bama 2 years and 1 year for the Colts. Obviously any 300+ pound lineman is going to have a solid layer of fat insulation, but that dude was jacked. Way more muscle than fat on him. Only 330 pound guy I've ever seen that didn't jiggle when he walked.

Now that guy is a weight room freak. Still holds weight room records at Bama, is now an assistant S&C coach for Bama, and his senior year ESPN wrote about how he was the strongest guy in college football... But I'd think most NFL quality lineman are built like him, i.e. not as much fat as people think
