Hand will try to relive the magic of when he and Malzahn worked together at Tulsa. During that two-year period under then-head coach Todd Graham, Hand was in the coaches box and Malzahn, the Golden Hurricanes offensive coordinator, was on the sidelines calling plays.

quote:

During that stint at Tulsa, Malzahn and Hand guided the nation's top ranked offense in 2007 and 2008. Hand was also a finalist for national offensive line coach of the year in 2008.

“Well it worked pretty well back then (at Tusla),” Malzahn said. “Our personalities complement each other. He’s got a good feel for things, so we just figured we’d carry that over like we did in Tulsa. I think it’ll be a real good thing.”

I think Steele in the box will be a good thing and I really believe Hand in the box will serve Gus well.

Not surprised with Hand but I'd prefer Steele on the field

I prefer our DCs on the field. But, I guess the appropriate question is whether Steele is usually up there?

He was in the Box at LSU. Chavis is a box guy as well. It can work just fine.

If Steele was a fiery guy like Muschamp, would definitely want him on the field. I think T-Will is better served on the field.

Steele's been in the box his whole career iirc... if you're calling a defense, it makes sense to see the whole field... more important to have position coaches on the field IMO (granted, it isn't worth much).

I prefer DC's in the box because seeing the whole field is critical. In the box you can see if your guys are lining up exactly right and then adjust if need be. Sure, you can send up assistants to do it for you, but it seems easier just to do it yourself. Then again, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about since I've never coached a down.

Also, I've noticed that Steele does coach from the field sometimes. I was watching some Clemson games when he was coaching and he was on the sidelines in a couple of them. (He was in the box vs. AU in 2010, though). I think it depends on how comfortable he is with the offense he is playing against. With offenses like ours and Clemson's he is probably more comfortable in the box so he can see the little details of what they're doing with all their complex motions.

15 yds in the iron bowl isn't the kind of fiery I need.

I hope Hand is the veritable OC this year. Gus can give Rhett some stuff to do like figure out what goes on the signal cards or tell the WRs "Good Job!" when they catch a pass, but Hand needs to be the anchor.

Good. Now this board can bring back tradition of botching because the DC is not on the sideline. Like it matter at all.

Anchor Down!

Oh...wrong place. :cough: WAR EAGLE!

But seriously, I think the impact of whether a coach is in the box or on the sidelines is entirely up to comfort level. Some coaches like to see things from higher up with their own eyes while others prefer to have an assistant they trust relay that information while they personally interact with players on the field. Hopefully, having Hand in the booth and his familiarity with Gus will let the offense really click due to their chemistry and understanding of the other's thinking.

Maybe with Hand in the box and Gus on the field Lashlee can actually be more of a position coach and help the QB be more effective. I am sure with Watson Steele should be looking at the formations to adjust better. I have slept at a Holiday Inn Express so take it for what it's worth.
