Between the Lines article via 247

This is one of my favorite things 247 does each week we play. What Lashlee has done is very impressive. Really using other teams' film study against them, well, and in the process giving future defenses a lot more to prepare for......it's like an actual balanced offense, some might even call it a little UNPREDICTABLE!!!

The Author was really excited about how we were unpredictable coming out of the sugar huddle with a fake toss against LSU where Cox ALMOST scored.

So question becomes what happens to CRL at the end of the year? Most people think Gus turned over the reigns so if Lashlee failed, we could fire him and hire the elder or younger Briles.

If Rhett continues to have success I assume either he has the option to stay or he looks for another position on his own. I'm assuming he'd only leave for a HC gig at a smaller college.

Is there still an off-field role for Briles if Rhett stays?

I don't see us hiring Art Briles if we wouldn't even touch Bobby Petrino.

Regardless of if AU would hire him or not, I'm wondering what the recent offensive success means for CRL's future. Especially, if he's successful through the end of the season.

We'd have some serious negative recruiting to deal with if any Briles ever coached at AU, especially this closely to the Baylor scandal. Both Art and his son are complicit in those issues.

If Lashlee continues what he's doing now, I'd have no problem keeping him and having him call plays until he moves on to something bigger. I think it's obvious at this point that Gus had control over the plays and he was doing a poor job with that over the last year or so.

I'm not saying we should, but I don't think Jay Jacobs is above hiring Kendall and playing it off with "It was Art who was fired"

I also read somewhere (here) that the move would enable Gus to fire him as a scapegoat or help him move on if he was successful.

... his phone starts ringing?

IF (big if) the wins continue the least to do is hire a QB coach. The game plan cost us Clemson and the real reason was not having a QB ready. Without this how do you scheme a game plan? The what if's simply got to be too many. If RL has truly matured into the OC we need... it doesn't negate the need to fill his other position.

For whatever the reason(s) I don't care, IMO Gus needs to quit being so touchy about this.

ETA: less wordy

Even if we just finish with a "pretty good" year, Rhett should get calls from smaller schools.
The offense has always dominated lower levels (Tulsa, ASU, Samford), Rhett is a good recruiter, young energy and relatively high profile.

I think Rhett would be a better Sunbelt HC than OC in the SEC

Maybe, I think we stay with the same setup next year, and nothing changes.

It would be nice if we start employing high profile analysts like Saban is doing.

EDIT - I should have said talented analysts instead of high profile.

The question becomes do we lobby to keep him for another year and build off the talent and compete for the playoffs or do we want him to move on to a small school HC job and go after more proven talent like one of the Briles? If he stays and we compete then it would be a no brainer he gets an offer for 2018 and possibly have we missed out on the opportunity to bring Briles in. Right now I just want to win games and see the progress pay off against better SEC defenses. If that happens and Woody then becomes the heir apparent losing CRL becomes less of an issue with a DT QB ready to run Gus' offense after that and some other DT commits behind him.

Either way I agree it is time for Gus to get over it and bring in a true QB coach.

We already do, don't we? Isn't what Travis Williams was doing before? Gus has hired a lot of former HS coaches and former players for off-the-field positions.

He is improving quickly and benefiting from the plays called to his strengths. I still see some issues with the long ball and I think a QB specialist could bring that along sooner than later. I just don't know why Gus still forbids the use of outside help.
