I have absolutely no clue (and have played both sports but not such a competitive level)
so I wanted to ask - is there a huge difference between successfully coaching softball vs. baseball? To see what Coach Myers and his staff have done in such a short time is frigging amazing. I guess my question is - would or could it not translate to men's baseball? If not...why? Honest to God, I have no idea. The basics of the game seem to the same. Most strategy, training, teamwork, roles, motions, etc. are basically the same. Anyone?

I don't think the strategies are the same at all. Homeruns seem more common, and there seems to be less margin for error on defense, especially on the infield. Shortstop bobbles a ball in softball, runner beats the throw. In baseball, there seems to be more time to recover. Also-these 'slappers'...you don't see near as many infield hits in baseball.

Not sure about the different pitching strategies, but both are incredibly nuanced....

My personal opinion is that there are some people out there who would probably make great coaches ALMOST regardless of the sport.

Exactly, and the field dimensions have a huge impact on this. The extra 30 feet between each base gives baseball players that extra second or two on defense - either to recover from a slight bobble when fielding or for the pitcher/catcher to break on a "slap" hit down the first base line.

Also, the infield comes into play. I may be misremembering, but aren't softball infields all dirt? You hit a chopper off of that, it may go 5 to 10 feet higher than a baseball hard chopper off of grass. Takes longer to be fielded, plus the shorter distance to first, you get a lot of infield hits.

I am no expert, but it seems that the pitching strategy is wildly different since the softball pitchers don't worry as much about pitch count and rest days. If someone is good you can continue to go to the well every day like OU has done with Parker.I think this would make it easier to get further with less pitching talent than baseball that requires a large size rotation.

Pitching is vastly different. There are no "slappers" in baseball due to the length between bases. Softball has girls while baseball is males, there is a world of difference coaching the two.

Can it be done and a coach move from one to the other sure. Clint Myers won 5 juco softball championships then won 2 juco baseball championships then won 2 softball championships at ASU.

No doubt this is the biggest difference in how to coach.

Coaches can coach anything. It tells you there is more to identifying talent than mechanics. He could probably identify talent in nearly any sport. And then develop that talent.

Hopefully we keep him right where he is and then his son takes over after that.

Just as I use to think Pat Summit could coach a men's team successfully, I believe Coach Meyer could coach baseball successfully. He could pick up the nuances. Didn't one of his sons play in MLB?

Both of his sons were drafted but neither made it to the show. Clint Myers has 2 Juco baseball national championships.
