The sixth-round draft choice from Auburn looks like he belongs. Artis-Payne has run hard between the tackles and showed enough burst to hit the creases on the edge. He’s also been reliable as a receiving option out of the backfield. It’s early, but this is the start the Panthers were hoping for from the rookie.

Don't know why Malzahn got away from this, but Fannin made a lot of plays and was wide open most of the time coming out of the backfield. I hope we put the RB wheel route back in the playbook this year.

AUsome news!!!

I also wish AU would get back to throwing to the RB's ala the Tubbs days.

I think it's tough throwing to a RB when you have Sammie Coates and Duke on the same field. It makes wheel routes a little less important. With just one big impact receiver I imagine we'll see it some this year.

Additionally, as awesome as NM was, the short throw was not a strength of his.

Looking forward to seeing CGM use The Whole Passing Game with JJ this year.

I loved Nick Marshall as our QB, but the guy had a rough go of it on short routes.

ETA: Completely missed BB making the exact same point

I still think Gus got too cute with proving Marshall was a passer last year.

In 2014, according to Pro Football Focus, Nick Marshall had the 2nd highest overall grade for QBs in the ENTIRE FBS

I agree, and to an extent, I think Gus' hubris worked against him last season w/ the entire situation NM was going into in 2014...

...so two things occurred 1)NM was his first returning QB in a long time and 2) we were expected to increase the passing after the run-heavy offense of 2013.

These two things combined I think forced Gus to use NM and run the offense in a manner that maybe wasn't the most effective. However, it is what was expected due to talk going on around NM.

Good for CAP hope he makes team. Sammie Coates had a case of the dropsies Monday in Steelers camp.

We hit the rbs several times in the spring game. I hope we add it to our arsenal

You are discounting the losses we took at RB, HB, and OL. The line was not nearly as strong as the previous year and WR seemed to be our strongest asset, why not try to push towards that?

I think we were both appropriately diplomatic with regard to comment on NM's short game.

CAP doing well in the NFL is not a surprise, he has excellent vision, between the tackles runner, blocks well, and can catch the ball out of the backfield. He may not be great at any particular thing, but he is very good at all aspects of the position. CAP is plain and simply a well rounded RB.

^^THIS^^

In 2013 by the end of the season there was no one Robinson/Kozan/Prosch couldn't block. Even in FSU game it was Jernigan blowing up Reece and the left side. When you lose all 3 of those guys you aren't going to be able to lineup and run 2 plays all game. We had to have more passing because we didn't have the dominant run blocking from last year to handle the loaded boxes. At the end of the day we were a few plays from being 11-1 in 2014. Offense was fine (except for UGA) all season long. If we could have kept teams under 30 we would have played for the SEC title again. Just how it goes sometimes

The vet RBs in Carolina are calling CAP "Soldier Boy".

https://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/14755/soldier-boy-cameron-artis-payne-making-a-new-name-for-himself

quote:

He’s not even called "Cap" by many after a trip to the Dairy Queen with fellow running backs.

"We were at Dairy Queen and the lady was like, 'Oh, he looks like Soldier Boy,'" fullback Mike Tolbert said. "I’m like, 'Who, him? OK.'"

The name has stuck.

"Man, it’s a killer, man," Artis-Payne said. "It’s a killer. I really didn’t see what she was talking about. Yeah, it’s a hard one. But as a rookie you can’t put up too much of a fight. You take it."

I take it CAP isn't a fan.
