Matthew Stevens? @matthewcstevens
Pearl does not expect coaching staff changes will be made this offseason. #MGMAuburn

Josh Vitale? @AUBlog
Auburn coach Bruce Pearl: "Next year, our expectations should be to be in the NCAA Tournament."

Dana Sulonen? @DanaSulonen
Pearl: Should never reflect on season until season is over. I'm announcing will not be accepting a bid to any tournament, unless it was NIT

Josh Vitale? @AUBlog
Bruce Pearl: "If you want to put me on the hot seat, you can go there. But it's not. ... Our program is in great position."

Dana Sulonen? @DanaSulonen
Pearl: I'd give myself a C. When you come up a few games short, I can't see giving any higher than that

Dana Sulonen? @DanaSulonen
Players: Give them a B. We did win 18 games.

Matthew Stevens? @matthewcstevens
I asked Pearl on if it's critical that he make the NCAA Tournament: "If you want to put my arse on a hot seat, you can do it. But it's not."

Oh great, another year of having Steven Pearl get paid $200k+ for holding a clipboard .

Baby Pearl isn't considered a full time assistant position or w/e though, so maybe he shifts somewhere else

There isn't a "should be"

I miss the old days of the NIT being heavily influenced by ESPN to improve ratings.

We'd have secured a spot easy

Indeed. Extra practice time isnt going to help that much. If anything, it( tCBI) would be an embarrassment for our players.

Although it was a tough way to end the season, I'm still very optimistic about the future with this group moving forward. This offseason will be extremely important for these young guys in building chemistry, cohesiveness and developing each others roles. A lot of which is built on playing together without coaches even being around. You have to keep in mind, basketball isn't football. Our players can get together anytime and play and they will almost every day.

Always refreshing to hear a coach tell it like it is

There is only one situation I'd be okay playing in the CBI, if we only played the walkons as a reward for working hard all year.

Games don't mean shite, but would be a huge reward/encouragement

just need a defense and we're in the tournament.
Not building a team mentality is directly on pearl.

I'm not happy with Pearl's in game adjustments but it'd be hard for any coach to develop a lot of chemistry with this team. Everybody talks about the 4 freshmen starters, but I think our upperclassmen situation is more telling:

-SR, TJ Lang - JUCO transfer - 2ND year in program
-SR, Ronnie Johnson - Grad Transfer - 1st year in program
-SR, LaRon Smith - 1st year in program
-JR, TJ Lang - 3rd year in program

So the 3 seniors are basically underclassmen in terms of being with this team, and then you have TJ Lang. And none of them started anyway.

Wiley coming in mid-season and becoming a starter in a few weeks essentially nullified any chemistry built in the 1st month of the season and the offseason as well.

I didn't realize we had 2 TJ Langs, weird.

Then he is going to have to concentrate on defensive rebounding and free throws. That must be a point of emphasis. If AU just gets 10% more of each, AU is probably in the NCAA tournament. AU does a great job getting to the line, just have to capitalize. Ranking 280 in FT% and 318 in defensive rebounding % is inexcusable.

Al.com article provides more context than just a handful of twitter quotes.

Bruce Pearl just wrapped up his third season as Auburn's head basketball coach and the Tigers are still looking for their first postseason appearance since 2009. Auburn finished the 2016-17 campaign with an 18-14 record, including losses in six of the final eight games. The Tigers also lost in the opening round of the SEC Basketball Tournament for the second year in a row. On Friday, Pearl announced his team would not accept a bid to the College Basketball Invitational. Toward the end of his lengthy press conference, he was asked to evaluate how "critical" it is for his team to make the postseason next year.

Pearl quickly made it clear that he's not concerned about his job security on the Plains. "If you want to put my arse on the hot seat, it's not," Pearl said. "There's a difference between being accountable and being in a situation where when you evaluate a program. I place my basketball program right now - and I won't specify any particular league - we are in the upper division of any Power 5 conference as far as the status of our program and where we are right now. That's how coaches should be judged. Do I want to go to the tournament next year? Absolutely. Should there be an expectation that we go to the tournament? Absolutely. "Critical is when you're in the hospital and you're in critical condition. Our program is not in the hospital. It is not in critical condition. Our program is in a great position. If you have one of the best seasons that they've had in 14 years and you want to start talking to me about critical, then you've lost perspective on where this program has been, how it's valued and how it's judged. You just have. Our fan base does not feel that way... Our program is in really, really good shape."

Eleventh-seeded Auburn lost a 10-point lead and fell to No. 14 seed Missouri in overtime 86-83 at the SEC Tournament Wednesday night in Nashville, Tenn. Pearl, who signed the program's first five-star prospects in freshmen Mustapha Heron and Austin Wiley, is 44-54 in three seasons at Auburn and 16-38 in SEC play. He finished 15-20 in his first season and 11-20 in his second.

This year the Tigers (18-14) notched their first winning season since 2009. Not only does Pearl feel good about the direction of the program, he doesn't foresee making any changes to the staff next year. "I think the staff is pretty solid," he said. "I know the staff is solid from the standpoint of I'm pleased with my staff. All my assistants are ready to be head coaches. If that's something that they desire and look to do this fall or spring, I will support them. My anticipation is it'll have to be a pretty good job for them to leave. I think they're excited about next year and sort of seeing this through." Auburn last made the NCAA Tournament in 2003, the longest active drought in the SEC, and the NIT in 2009.

Even in HS we had to run suicides after each missed free throw in practice. For a major university to have such a problem with scholarship basketball players shooting FTs is ridiculous.
