Auburn NFL roundup: Rookie Jonathan Jones off to good start in preseason Week 1
quote:
As an undrafted rookie, cornerback Jonathan Jones needs to make a strong impression to make the team when the New England Patriots trim their roster to 53 players for the regular season.
So far, so good for the former Auburn standout.
"Jonathan's really done a good job," New England coach Bill Belichick said earlier in training camp. "He's been out there every day, he works hard, he's fast, he's tough and obviously played in a good conference. You can see his speed in that conference, which there's a lot of speed on the other side of the ball, too, to see it against. He learns well. He's a great kid. He works hard. He'll do whatever you ask him to do. He's done a good job. He's showed up in the kicking game, so I think he's been very competitive."
Jones backed that up by making five tackles – the most among former Auburn players in the opening week of the NFL preseason – and breaking up a pass in the Patriots' 34-22 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.

Parkey got only one kick in his competition with Caleb Sturgis for the Eagles' place-kicker job, connecting on an extra point.
More info on Parkey.

What could be the Eagles' most intense battle for a roster spot is likely headed to a photo finish at the wire.
Caleb Sturgis and Cody Parkey are locked in what is shaping up as a closer fight than expected for the team's placekicker duties.
Round one against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went to Sturgis by virtue of him getting more chances than Parkey.
Sturgis got the first kicks of the night and made his lone extra point and was good on a 42-yard field goal attempt.
Parkey made his one extra point attempt and did not attempt a field goal.
On kickoffs, both kickers got two and Sturgis had more distance, kicking 65 and 69 yards to Parkey's 64 and 58.
Keep in mind with the new kickoff rule that puts touchbacks at the 25 yardline, booming picks are not required. Higher, unreturnable ones are preferred.
quote:
Parkey's 2014 season was one for the ages. Acquired in a preseason trade from the Colts, he connected on 32 of 36 field goal attempts (88.9 percent) and all 54 extra points for a team and rookie record of 150 points. Four of his field goals were from 50 yards and out.
Sturgis was originally a fifth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2013 and kicked two years in Miami, going 26-for-34 on field goal attempts as a rookie and 29-for-37 in '14. He was a perfect 74-for-74 on extra points.
Released by the Dolphins in the preseason of 2015, the Eagles signed him when Parkey got hurt.

I wish he was on the Falcons, just so all the UGA/Falcons fans would be forced to like him if he did well.

Barber totaled 40 yards on 11 carries and secured his sole target for 10 yards in Saturday's 27-21 preseason victory over the Jaguars.
The undrafted rookie out of Auburn, fighting for a backup role behind Doug Martin and Charles Sims, made the most of the extended opportunity he received due to Martin sitting out the game with sore ribs. Barber only posted a game-long run of eight yards but paced all rushers in both carries and yardage on the night. The solid performance certainly can do nothing but help Barber's case for a roster spot, although fellow backup Storm Johnson did counter with a strong effort of his own that included a rushing touchdown.
Barber also had a TD that was called back to the 1-yd line.

Duke Williams won the strongest hands competition for the Rams
Xavier Dampeer could have told you that.

CORNERBACK Malcolm Butler, Logan Ryan, Justin Coleman, Cyrus Jones, Jonathan Jones, Cre’von LeBlanc, Darryl Roberts, E.J. Biggers, V’Angelo Bentley Butler, Ryan and Jones are locks, while Coleman is a near-lock for the 53-man roster. That leaves Jonathan Jones, LeBlanc, Roberts, Biggers and Bentley competing for what’s likely just one roster spot. Jones, who received first-team reps Sunday, is the favorite among that group, though LeBlanc was extremely impressive in the Patriots’ preseason opener. It might come down to who’s the better special teams player, and so far that has been Jones.

Duke had a costly drop yesterday as well. Hearing that he has all of a sudden, had a severe case of the dropsies. One practice he had 5. Probably will maker the practice roster though.

Sammie had 2 catches for 66 yards (one of them a 58 yard TD).

CJ Uzomah starting (at the moment) at TE for the Bungals. Looks like he has put on some good weight. With the injuries in front of him, he has a chance to try and solidify some PT.

Finally, we begin to realize Duke's talent was greatly overrated. If you can't run fast you can easily be replaced in the NFL.

I don't think his talent is over rated And saying that if you aren't fast you can't play in the nfl is laughable.
Pretty sure the best WR of all time ran a 4.7...

Anquan Bolden made quite a nice career out of running slow.

Crabtree is not very fast either, but that dude is separating better than he ever has right now.

One thing is for sure, being slow and having stone hands isn't going to cut it. Judging by the twitterature and various articles,I found on him by the Rams insiders, he has been inconsistent, catching 3 and dropping 1 the whole camp.
Yes, I made up the word, "twitterature."
