Team USA lost to Canada and is out of the tournament

Not for lack of effort on Austin Wiley's part. He had another good game with 13 points and 17 rebounds.

Canada had no answer for him download but they just would not feed him. Very encouraged about Wiley's improvement after this tournament

Yeah he's turned into a beast. He's going to be a monster this year. I'm very excited to see him and this team play.

But on the other hand I was looking forward to the possibility of Wiley and EJ Montgomery playing together next seadon, but if Wiley plays during the season like he did in this tournament and keeps progressing then the chance of hanging onto him another season is very very slim.

His FG% and FT% may hold him back in the draft. Considering how physically dominating he is playing this level, his FG% should be higher.

For his FT, there is a very obvious solution

I was hoping the fact that most teams aren't looking for traditional "true" centers anymore, and that he needs to work on his offensive game like you said would both be factors that would keep him in college for a while.

Pretty sure they aren't out. Semifinal games losers almost always still play for the Bronze medal in international country competitions.

Yeah, we play Spain for Bronze at 11am CT tomorrow.

But you know what I meant. Out of it as far as bringing home the Gold. Which for Team USA in any international basketball tournament should be the expectation. This is only the 3rd time in the history of the FIBA U19 World Cup that the USA hasn't at least made the championship game. 1995 and 2011 being the others .

USA beat Spain to win the Bronze

Wiley finished the tournament averaging 10.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game

One of seven players in the entire tournament to average a double-double

Kyle Tucker , UK beat writer who reported on games, had this to say about Wiley

quote:

Wiley far from a perfect player. But he'll be most physically imposing player in the SEC and rebounds/attacks rim like life depends on it.

Our guys have gotten some solid off-season SEC superlatives so far.

- Austin Wiley: "most physically imposing player in the SEC"
- Jared Harper: "best returning PG in the SEC"

The best returning PG part doesn't say much but we're lined up to have a pretty good year. Hate the schedule isn't in our favor

I hate that the rest of the SEC is selfish and has to improve at the same time as us. 2-3 years ago and beyond I would feel super confident about a team with this talent and depth making the NCAA Tournament... But now we have a real battle, and like you said have to fight a weak OOC schedule.

But I posted that tweet about Harper on the rant last week and a Florida fan got SUPER salty about it for some reason. Named like 7 PGs and said Harper wasn't close to any of them. One of them was Terrance Phillips from Mizzou and a couple others were only averaging 6 or 7 ppg

Not one average more points per game than Harper so I tried to reason with him and said "okay, at the least Harper is the best scorer among returning PGs". Dude was still a little bitch and claimed 3 of them were still "out of Harper's league" as scorers. Nvm Harper averaging more points in less minutes, and shooting a higher % from everywhere on the court than the guys he mentioned. Facts be damned.

He even brought up incoming freshmen PG. Apparently doesn't know what "returning" means.

I know Rothstein loves Harper, but I'm not sold that he makes a big step forward to be the guy this year

While I think Mitchell is a combo G in a PG body, I think by mid-late OOC schedule he is a near split for minutes with Harper. Mitchell should be a significantly better defender

Do we know what recruits we are after?

We should go after Myreon Jones from Huffman IMO.
6'3" 170 lb PG

Dude has absolutely blasted up the rankings recently. He's now the #1 player in the state and is also now a 5* and top 30 player on 247's rankings.

He's apparently so new to the rankings that not only does he not have a picture or any crystal balls on his profile, but his only listed offers I'm 247 are Murray State and UAB. So it'd be good to get out ahead on him.

He's been a 247 5* for at least 3 months so it isn't "recently". He's also went through Nike EYBL in April/May for places like ESPN (Best BBall recruiting) or Rivals to rate him. Short version is, the 247 guy who does bball rankings Jerry Meyer is known for regularly "overrating" guys he feels deserves more exposure

The kid may be one worth keeping an eye on, but he is far from deserving of a scholarship at this point in time.

When doing basketball recruiting rankings, ESPN generally seems to be the most reliable from what I've followed. I'd wait for ESPN to give him a grade to get a better gauge

I wouldn't go that far. This kid was Huffman last year. We could use leadership and a sharp shooter, and that's this kid. He had a game against Mtn Brook last year where he hit 9 threes

Besides the one EJ Montgomery occupies, we don't have another open scholarship in the 2018 class.

In the case Wiley and Heron go pro, Javian Fleming and Diante Wood seem to be on the radar but who knows what opportunities may arise by then..

2019 is setting up to be a crucial recruiting year because of attrition and we're in early on some major prospects. If we have success this year and next. Look out.

I've heard that we do not expect Heron to be back in 2018.

There also will likely be a transfer as well. Murray should graduate and be eligible to grad transfer while Horace Spencer seems likely to fall in the post playing time pecking order

Best on best: Highlights from Auburn’s scrimmage

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn reached the midway point of its scheduled practices for Italy with a spirited session Thursday afternoon.

The team closed out the three-hour practice — the third of the week — with a scrimmage refereed by FIBA international officials highlighted by a five-minute quarter of what Auburn coach Bruce Pearl calls “best on best.”

Pearl coached the blue team (first team) consisting of Davion Mitchell (PG), Bryce Brown (SG), Danjel Purifoy (SF), Chuma Okeke (PF) and Horace Spencer (C).

They faced an orange team coached by Steven Pearl with a lineup of Jared Harper (PG), Mustapha Heron (SG), Samir Doughty (SF), Cole Blackstock (PF) and Anfernee McLemore (C).

The blue team dominated the quarter 16-4 without allowing a field goal. They briefly flirted with a shutout going up 9-0 in the three-plus minutes before Will Macoy hit a pair of free throws off the bench.

Spencer led the way for the blue team with 7 points including a pair of tip-ins while the guards (Brown and Mitchell) each buried a three-pointer.

“They told me to run the floor as fast as I can, run back on defense when I can,” Spencer said. “I see that if I run the floor as fast I can and get down the court I’m going to get the ball easier.”

Spencer’s strong performance Thursday continued what was a important week of practice for the power forward. Monday was the first day the junior played faced contact since his shoulder surgery at midseason.

“It’s just great to have him back and see him flying around out there,” Pearl said. “He jumps out at me.”

The blue team also easily won the other two quarters (34-11 and 24-9) playing with all the scholarship players.

With the roster combined, Mitchell was still the team’s primary point guard. The freshman turned heads all week with his defensive intensity and ability to effectively run the offense, but Pearl cautioned against reading too much into his roster management.

“What I would say is, he clearly is going to have a great competition with Jared to see who starts and who finishes,” Pearl said. “ It’s close. Anybody would tell you is close. The fact that Jared as a sophomore, Davion as a freshman, Jared has some advantages having played last year but they’re neck and neck and they’ll both play.”
[/quote]

Translation: Jared Harper will start out the year starting but Davion Mitchell will eventually start at point before too long.

I really like Harper but Mitchell is a demon on defense and crafty on offense.
Where is Murray? Why is he not out there?
