It seems like every year we hear of bad team morale. I don't get it.
We've had quite a few guys that were "give me the ball" type players. To make it worse, they were all transfers/JUCO and had limited eligibility. Not everyone can shoot every possession
-'15: Mason/Bowers (KT wasn't super selfish)
-'16: Bowers/Canty/Harris/Dunans
-'17: Dunans/Heron/Harper/RoJo

Thought I'd throw some information in here since nothing has been posted in a while and a little info is coming out of the transfer marker.
First thing is Auburn is looking for 1-2 traditional transfers to sign this period as opposed to the grad transfers we have recently seen. According to JLee this is because the staff doesn't think there are enough shots to go around right now and we do not need any immediate impact guys. All of these players will have to sit a year.
People to keep an eye on - We are looking for a big combo guard and a big forward / center:
Miles Wilson - 6'5 Guard from Mount St. Mary's - Avg 11.8 pts - 4 rebounds as a FR last year - LINK - Some decent competition for this guy.
The more interesting to me is the duo from UMass that have decided to transfer. Both guys are from Louisiana originally and would like to continue to play together at their next school. Big thing with these guys is the competition is pretty stiff: Creighton, UConn, Seton Hall, and Auburn make up their final four. Hopefully proximity to home is something they are looking for because we are easily the closest.:
Dejon Jarreau - 6'5 Guard that can play all three spots and could be a beast in Pearl's system, or any system tbh. Hands down the best guard on the transfer market and IMO its not even close. Was the #38 ranked player in last years class and dropped 26 on Ole Miss in his second college game EVER, on the road - LINK - Rivals Reaction: Jarreau is the type of ultra-versatile guard that can do a litany of things in the backcourt and, by using the upcoming season as a redshirt year and putting on the proper weight, could turn into an NBA prospect overnight.
Brison Gresham - 2nd part of the package deal - 6'8 big man who didn't really play a lot last year. A redshirt year would probably be good for him. LINK EDIT: I just looked and this kids offer list.... Wow, I can't believe that he didn't play more last year.
Something I found interesting is this quote from Jarreau in article when talking about Auburn: “It is the SEC. They told me that their point guard would be gone by next year so when I come in it is going to be basically me to run the show. I like it. I haven’t visited yet but we are talking to Coach Bruce Pearl and it sounds nice.” --- I guess Jarred Harper is leaving

None of those guys really make me excited if it means Heron or someone else is leaving (I think that's who he meant instead of PG)
Both Miles and DeJon were pretty shitty offensive efficiency numbers.
DeJon basically is TJ Dunans 2.0. Lanky athletic ball handler who cant hit a jump shot to save his life

I read that Bama snagged Texas transfer Tevin Mack. Any news on AU lately?

Nothing definitive, pretty much what was posted above.
I wouldn't be as excited about Mack as Bama fans are. He had some major red flags with fitting in with the team

Basketball News:
- On final schedule delay per Bruce: "We are trying to find another high major game"
- We need this high major game due to being left out of BIG XII challenge (We will be left out in 2018-19 as well due to 2 yr cycles)
- Auburn will play MTSU "neutral site" in Birmingham this year
- Auburn looking into more "neutral site" games in AL at sites like Huntsville
Bruce on this year's team
- Danjel Purifoy is expected to move to the 3, shouldn't be a surprise given depth at the 4/5

Bruce on player positions
Desean Murray
Sounds like Desean Murray will be Cinmeon Bowers 2.0, but probably more accepting of being a post player not a PG
On Murray's game
Danjel Purifoy
I can't find a quote but I saw at some point that he will be moving to the 3 this year
Davion Mitchell
He has been exclusively talked about at PG with some articles claiming he is a "true PG" or "traditional PG" ... I think that is just due to his size + our lack of PG options
Desean Murray
quote:
I think Desean Murray and Malik Dunbar both give us guys who can play two, three, four

Desean is an undersized power forward. That's his best position

On Murray's game
quote:
Where you play is who you can guard so we'll see how he's able to guard guards. I know he can guard in the inside. The closer he gets to the basket the better he looks because he can rebound and he's got a real strong level of toughness

I agree. I think the hope was that Purifoy could be an improved/more dynamic Tyler Harris. Clearly that failed
Hard to gauge what to expect out of Purifoy next year, during SEC play he was very clearly affected by his ankle and his shot selection backs that up. Got to assume it impacted his defense too

AU just landed a transfer. Samir Douhgty from VCU. Beat out UConn, Oregon, SMU, South Carolina, and Pitt for him. On mobile so I can't link now but this is a pretty good get. We wanted a combo guard who would have to sit a year and we got it.

Auburn won't have a single scholarship senior on this year's team. Dunbar, Desean Murray, Bryce Brown and Horace Spencer will be juniors; Mustapha Heron, Austin Wiley, Danjel Purifoy, Jared Harper and Anfernee McLemore or sophomores; and Chuma Okeke and Davion Mitchell have both arrived as true freshmen.

May not have a senior, but we have some guys with good experience. Not having a SR is the least of my concerns for next season.

Newcomers bring 'edge to our team' (Rivals)
quote:
AUBURN | There will be three new faces and one slightly familiar one when Auburn suits up for its fourth season under head coach Bruce Pearl later this year.
After coming up short in reaching the postseason last year, Pearl believes his four newcomers bring the added depth and toughness this year’s team needs to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 years.
The newcomers include transfer Desean Murray, junior college signee Malik Dunbar and true freshmen Chuma Okeke and Davion Mitchell.
“All four kids are tough, particularly the two transfers,” Pearl said. “Desean Murray, who sat out last year after transferring from Presbyterian, and Malik Dunbar, who is from the College of Central Florida, they will bring an edge to our team that we needed.
“Especially when you have such a young team last year, practice will be more physical, we will be a tougher team next year. They are going to bring and edge to us.”
Murray can play the small or power forward while Dunbar can play shooting guard or small forward. Mitchell will compete with sophomore Jared Harper for the starting point guard position.
Okeke, who will attend the USA Basketball U19 World Cup Team training camp later this summer, could start as a true freshman at power forward.
“I don’t think there’s a better on-ball defender in the entire 2017 recruiting class than Davion Mitchell,” Pearl said. “I’ve never seen Jared Harper bring the ball up the floor and ever had to turn his back on a defender until Davion got in front of him, and that’s going to be a wonderful, wonderful competition. Those two guys will both play the position, and they’ll play it extremely well for us.
“Chuma Okeke, instinctively he really makes everybody else better on the floor. He can score, he can pass, he knows how to move the basketball, he plays bigger than his size and he can guard multiple positions. All four of those kids I think bring a level of physicality and toughness that’ll really help our team.”
Not surprisingly, Pearl is excited about the depth on this year’s team. Returning players include juniors Bryce Brown and Horace Spencer, and sophomores Harper, Mustapha Heron, Danjel Purifoy, Austin Wiley and Anfernee McLemore.
“We are two deep in every position, and we’re going to anticipate that depth certainly will give us competition for positions, but probably and more importantly allow us to withstand injury, withstand foul trouble, and play at the pace I want to play,” Pearl said.
“I think when we go to our bench we will not drop off, and so how can we wear our opponent down with how we defend, with how we run, with how we press, with not letting our opponent rest. That’s the way you take advantage of your depth.”
