Just got back from court. My son, who is 20 now, got a speeding ticket in Oakwood Ga when he was 19. Since he was under the age of 20, they wont let you pay it early, you must appear before the judge. Good experience for him.
But, I would have to say that going to court is very entertaining. Some of the stories those people tell the judge are so fricking stupid, I cant believe they expect him to believe a word of it.
Also had some guys in there from the county lock up. DUI's and probation issues. Had them in the nice orange jumpsuits. One guy on probation for 6 months and had not checked in with his probation officer once. Not once. Told the judge that he didn't know how to get in contact with him . Judge put his arse in lock up for 3 months. Dude started balling. Dumbass
My first time to night court.

Yes, and it was thrown out. The cop did not show up.

This was more of a plea set up. You could get it thrown out unless the judge was feeling good. You either plea guilty, not guilty or Nolo, If you plea not guilty, you come back at a later date
He just needed to pay his fine but since he was a minor when he got the ticket, Oakwood Ga makes you appear. It was an inconvenience for me but it was better for him. Maybe a lesson...

I live in Alabama. What is the purpose of this rule? Generates more revenue?

No. The ticket ended up being cheap. I think it is a way for them to make the minors accountable. There were a few minors who had more than 4 points on their license and got them taken away. He also made a few who had a second offense do community service
Sons was 60 in a 45mph zone. Going to work at 3am. $125 fine. It was his first offense

Your son should've been pardoned just for going to work at 3am.

I went after getting a ticket for improper lane change + tailgating.
Basically, I was entering the interstate via on ramp and I went over two lanes to the center lane because it was miraculously clear. Well, a state trooper took that as aggressive driving.
Payed the tailgating online, improper lane change was mandatory appearance. Judge asked me for the plea, pleaded guilty. Asked me what happened. Asked if I paid the other ticket, which I had. I guess that impressed her because she just made me pay a small $7ish court fee and I was on my way.
But yeah, the two guys before me were both there for a DUI. Probably helped me out

Good possibility. I have to admit, this judge was pretty consistent. If you had a ticket, you were paying a fee. Nobody got out of anything. Georgia has crazy taxes on fines as well. Son's fine was $75. Total after taxes was $127. Unreal.

Several times unfortunately with my lead footed daughters (F you...no pics). Fortunately my son is an attorney. Helps with getting points knocked off and insurance preserved. they still had to pay the fine though.
And. I do not pay fines for my driver kids. Nor do I bail out of jail.

Neither do I.. He can pay his own

I would probably bail him out once. Then he is on his own. My father did that for me.

It was more juvenile than criminal. I have managed to stay out of trouble for the most part.

I went for speeding. I was the last one and the judge asked me what happened. I told him the truth. He said you are not disputing your ticket? No sir, I was speeding.
He said thank you for your honesty. Your violation is dismissed and you will just need to pay the court fee. 23.00

I'm an LEO in Florida, some of the best excuses are made in traffic court.
I had to go a couple of weeks ago and the guy said a city cop wrote him for 44 in a 35 (actual speed 59 in a 35) just cut him a break. Well the defendant said I believed the speed limit was 45 and he wrote me for 44 so there's no way this ticket is valid
Most people go to traffic court to ask the judge to withhold the points on their license.

I've been as a witness and a defendant.
Some of the stories/excuses you will hear are indeed unbelievably stupid.
Saw a Domino Pizza driver show up for a speeding ticket while wearing his uniform (this was 30 years ago when the had their 30 minute guarantee and everyone new they drove like bats out of hell). One lady had been stopped for running a stop sign, her excuse was that was dark and she didn't see the sign; she showed the judge a picture of the stop sign at night...GUILTY.
The last time I was there, it was for running a red light/no stop for right on red. I knew I didn't do it, but what most people don't appreciate is that you have to give the judge a reason to doubt the cop, and I was prepared to do that. I got really lucky, and the cop could not remember the facts of the case so the judge dismissed. Really was a waste of time for me, because it was two trips (first to enter a plea) into a bad part of town, and two afternoons off work for a $40 fine with NO points, but I was mad as hell and wanted my day in court.
Agree, they do try to make it as big of a PIA as possible.
