Except we have lost a ton of our top end talent that makes our recruiting/talent rankings inaccurate

We have lost 8 out of 22 top ~150 recruit from 2013-2015 classes to transfer/suspension/kicked off team

2013 - 2/5
2014 - 4/10
2015 - 2/7

We were well behind Bama/LSU/UGA/FSU/tOSU in recruiting to begin with, to add that super high attrition of our best players makes us fall even further behind.

We should perform better though and win more. We clearly had bigger issues (defense/Gus stubborness) than talent though that were holding us back from 10+W

Also, the notion that we are not winning because of a lack of talent completely ignores the great chasm between the number 1 recruited team (Bama) and the number 8 recruited team. There is a TREMENDOUS talent difference between those two rankings.

Lolz, it is not as big a chasm as you make it to be.

What has Clemsons rankings been the last few years?

It's more about development, scheme, coaching, schedule, luck from there. Plenty of talent on the team.

the most exciting thing I saw was we destroyed all our play calling tendencies from the last 3 years. finally! besides that Stidham looked like the real deal but then again...

exactly.

Regardless of what anyone says, we 100% have the talent necessary to win a national championship with this team, this year. Period. There is no disputing that.

It's pretty much what you said, from there. If we stay away from key injuries I think we'll be in the playoff mix all year.

I finally got to watch the game this morning. My few thoughts for those who care

1 - Love how good Stidham looked. Not much can be added to what you guys already posted. Looks legit

2 - Can Sean White catch? Cause he has probably played his last day at QB for Auburn. With Stidham rolling, Malik Willis is the 2nd best QB on the team and its really not even close. Kid was play for us at some point, and be awesome

3 - Why was Carlson punting?

4 - Derrick Brown and the rest of the Line looked very good. Where was Cowart?

5 - There are no missing pieces if we stay healthy. We have some positions that we do not have the back ups we need but the starters are legit

My only negative, or basic concern. We still dont have the depth at running back we need. Behind Pettway, there may not be anyone who can play that position the way we need them to. I had that concern last year and we saw it happen. KJ is great but is not really the every down pounding back we need. Plus, he is made of Carl Lawson fabric. Malik Miller looks promising but we dont really know about him.

We need to recruit some big pounding backs. We need them..

And lastly, our receivers all look good right now. Even Will "Brannigan" Hastings. But we need Kyle Davis. Don't kid yourself. We do not recruit that kind of talent at WR often at Auburn. We need that kid to get what ever is up fixed and to be back by the fall. Him and NCM could wreck shite if they mesh.

Cowart started on the 2nd team DL. Don't think I saw him play a ton in the second half. First half though he was getting some good penetration into the face of Stidham.

Because Ian Shannon had a funeral to go to so he missed the A day game.

Apparently Hastings has been dubbed "White Lightning" by teammates

We have two proven upper classmen in Pettway and KJ... with another couple guys behind them who have been in the system for at least a year -- miller and Kam Martin. We also have Barrett coming in this fall.

I'm not sure what else you want. RBs get injured... we should have 5 capable guys come fall camp.

Bigger talent difference going into 2013 than there was last year.

That's cool, but how do you explain the other 4 losses on our schedule + some shoestring wins?

I attribute a majority of our losses last year to a) not having a capable backup quarterback; and b) bad play calling

... So this year with a capable backup + good starting QB & potentially improved play calling from Chip we should compete for the playoffs (Potential 1L SEC Team)?

So clearly the "gap" you speak of isn't really that relevant

Yes, I agree that assuming those pieces of the puzzle fall into place, we will have a legitimate chance of making the 4 team playoff at which point we will likely face a chasm with teams with significantly superior talent than we possess.

Neal Caudle 2.0. Still glad to have him on the roster. It's nice to have a Stan White/Pat Nix or a Pat Nix/D Craig combo.

I really hope we get Harold Joiner this cycle. He's a local kid to me (Bham). He grew up playing football with us in Vestavia before going to Mnt Brook. I plan on watching a bunch of their games this year.

We have one right now and that is Pettway.

KJ is a good back for a few runs per game but he is no workhorse. Its pretty simple to see. He had not played any considerable time without getting hurt. Plus, he just is not our penetrating back.

Cam Martin is a outside runner. He will be a good one but not a every down back

Miller has potential but who knows at this point. He was hurt last year as well with only a few carries.

Just like last year, if Pettway goes down, we will be hurting for a every down back who can pound the rock

Martin didn't impress the other day. He had at least one fumble, maybe two. That fumble I am sure of was at the goal line. Stidham hit him in stride, on a wheel route, and Kam tried to catch it with his forearms. Kid is quick, but not sure he could step in and be an every down back if others ahead of him went down.

Just like Clemson the past couple of years.

The 'chasm' you speak of just isn't that significant.
