Why Auburn's the team to beat for 'brutal' hitter Quindarious Monday (AL.com)
quote:

Quindarious Monday holds offers from more than 15 schools, but one is currently standing out above the rest.

"Auburn is in the lead right now -- my front-runner," Monday said while participating at Nike's The Opening Atlanta regional camp Sunday in Buford, Ga. "Then I've got Florida State, Florida, Tennessee, then Georgia and Michigan is in the mix, of course."

The 6-foot-3, 175 pounder at nearby Carver High School in Atlanta is ranked as a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 13 athlete in the 247Sports Composite. He plays on both sides of the ball right now, but is primarily being recruited as a safety at the next level.

Monday describes himself as a long, physical and "just brutal" hitter who loves contact. The constant communication he has with the Auburn staff has the Tigers in the lead for his services.

"The love they show," Monday said of Auburn. "I interact with all the coaches and they interact with me on a daily basis. I recently heard from Coach Gus (Malzahn) Thursday as a matter of fact. He told me he wants me to get up (to campus) one of these Saturdays so I can see the scrimmage in the stadium and be by his side and see how it goes."

Monday, who attends Carver High School in nearby Atlanta, said he's been to the Plains about four or five times. He plans to return April 9 for the A-Day spring scrimmage. He continues to build a relationship with new Auburn defensive backs coach Greg Brown.

"I love Coach Brown," Monday said. "His experience, he isn't afraid to tell you how it is... He's coached a lot of good players in the league, like HaHa Clinton-Dix. That's a big one for me because he's playing safety. Knowing he's doing so good and he was under Coach Greg, I know I can do good under Coach Greg."

Monday is also considering taking trips to Cincinnati, Georgia, Kentucky and Michigan this spring. He plans to make his commitment at the end of his senior season, but said it's "possible" his decision could come sooner.

Let's just hope Clemson doesn't offer. Calls that his "dream school", fortunately they have very limited numbers this cycle

Auburn leads for in-state legacy Nathaniel Watson (AL.com)
quote:

Last November, Nathaniel Watson followed in the footsteps of his relatives last when he took the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn for a football game.

Watson shined in AHSAA Class 1A state championship game as Maplesville defeated Linden 36-14 on the Plains. He had three receptions for 134 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown, to go along with five rushes for 72 yards and another score.

"It felt good playing at Auburn," Watson said Sunday during Nike's The Opening Atlanta regional camp in Buford, Ga. "It was amazing to play in Auburn's stadium. To be able to play at Auburn as a college player would be pretty good."

Watson's great uncle is former Auburn player Tommie Agee. His cousin, Harold Morrow, was also a Tiger. Watson has an opportunity to suit up in orange and blue next year after picking up a defensive offer from Auburn last summer.

"They wanted me to commit the day I got the offer," Watson said of his relatives. "I'm still going through the decision."

While the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder may not be nearing a commitment, Auburn is his current leader.

"They think I'd be a good safety or linebacker player and fill a couple different spots on the defense," he said. "It's just nice to be around them. It's like family when I go down there... The coaching staff is amazing and the atmosphere that they've got out there. The environment is nice, and the education."

Watson's last visit was to Alabama, though the Crimson Tide has yet to offer him. He plans on attending Auburn's A-Day spring scrimmage next month and is also planning trips to Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Watson hears from Auburn and Ole Miss more than any other schools. He's been to the Plains about "five or six" times as a recruit and is looking forward to making his first trip to Oxford, Miss.

What does he like about the Rebels?

"Their campus and their uniforms," he said. "I haven't been out there yet but I've been talking to the coaches."

Watson is ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 18 athlete in the country in the 247Sports Composite. He has no timetable for a commitment.

About time our legacies felt some pressure to commit to AU

Does that have a subject? Several insiders mentioned whatever happened in Mobile in a negative light if you're vaguely speaking of that.

Yes, the subject that he was demoted and replaced by TW because of mishaps. What happen in Mobile? I'm sorry. I truly missed that part..

quote:

Can you explain all of that bullshite about our WR class "being set" and KB was "primarily focused" on the next recruiting classes?

Do you think WR was a pressing need in our last class or by the end, were we recruiting the best available we could get? Maybe primarily wasn't the most appropriate word for his focus but it was obvious he was focusing on future prospects and building relationships through the timelines of visits/contact with them.

The hell I know. I heard it was miscommunication or whatever.

No it wasn't our biggest need. More irrelevance. We still missed on guys until the end and ended up with Jatarvious. Jatarvious may do great for us (hope so) but he was clearly backup to the backup plan.

Again, link? You act like he was looking ahead of the 2017 class so that he could plan for the next. That narrative only helps those that say he wasn't ready for recruiting.

Auburn 'sticks out from the rest' for Tuscaloosa 4-star receiver Seth Williams (AL.com)
quote:

One school is coming hard after four-star Paul Bryant receiver Seth Williams, but it's not the hometown school.

The 6-foot-3 Williams, fresh off a basketball state championship with the Stampede of Cottondale, said while everybody thinks he's going to Alabama, it's Auburn that is making a bigger push.

Williams said Sunday at the Atlanta Opening Regional that Auburn, Ole Miss and Georgia seem to be coming after him the hardest.

"Just Auburn, it sticks out from the rest," Williams said. "Every time I go down there, it's something new."

Williams lives just minutes from Alabama's campus, but Alabama hasn't reached out lately. The Crimson Tide won't sign a big receiver class this year and already have a commitment from south Florida four-star recruit Xavier Williams.

"Not pretty hard," Williams said when asked how hard Alabama was recruiting him. "They've died down a little bit. It is what it is. It's part of the recruiting process. Some teams are going to want you and some teams are not going to want you."

Williams was going to commit in January, but decided not to. When pressed if he was going to choose Florida State at the time, he smiled and said, "something like that."

He said it was a combination of other schools pushing him to hold off on his decision and talking it over with his parents, but more so the rushed decision.

"I thought about it and I felt like it was an early decision and I rushed into it," Williams said. "I have to think about it more. I'll probably (commit) after football season."

Here's what Williams said about Ole Miss and Georgia:

Ole Miss: "They've got a new receivers coach in from Cal (Jacob Peeler). They're rotating a lot of receivers in, so it would be a chance to play."

Georgia: "I've got to get down there some more to get a feel for it. I've only been down there once."

Williams said he will take visits this spring and summer before narrowing down his recruitment. He caught 51 passes for 626 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior and added five interceptions.

Not getting hopes up just yet but man if we could land both Williams and Ross that would be a hell of a WR class just from instate guys

Lots of opening updates coming. Breaking some of these articles up in multiple posts so easier to digest

Atlanta Opening Regional notes: In-state recruits Justyn Ross, Bo Nix earn top honors (AL.com)
quote:

Justyn Ross and Bo Nix proved why they are two of the state's top prospects in their respective classes on Sunday at the Atlanta Opening Regional.

The 6-foot-5 Ross, a receiver from Central-Phenix City in the 2018 class, earned an invitation to Nike Football's The Opening Finals. He was one of six invites among 500 prospects in attendance for the event.

Ross, who earned the invitation despite missing time late in the event with a left ankle injury, is the state's top prospect. The Opening Finals will be held in Beaverton, Ore., in late June and early July.

Nix, a rising junior and the son of former Auburn quarterback Patrick Nix, was named the quarterback MVP of the camp. The positional MVPs don't automatically earn Opening invites, but Nix has a strong chance to be an Elite 11 performer when he's a rising senior at this time next year.

Nix transferred from Scottsboro to Pinson Valley when his father took the head coaching job there. He has recently earned offers from Alabama and Georgia.

OPENING INVITES

There was a ton of talent on board with high-profile recruits. It's surprising that only six players were invited today, but more will come. Last year, 12 were invited from Atlanta on-spot with nine more to follow.

* Justyn Ross, WR, Central-Phenix City: Five-star says he'll focus on recruiting again when his mother returns from serving our country in Kuwait later this summer.

* Channing Tindall, LB, Columbia, S.C. - Three-star linebacker was also the linebacker MVP and the rating champion with a 4.86 40-yard dash, 4.19 in shuttle, 45-foot heavy ball toss from his knees and a 39.6 vertical jump. Has an Auburn offer, seems to be a South Carolina lean.

* JJ Peterson, LB, Moultrie, Ga. - Four-star linebacker leaning toward Alabama now, per he and his coach Rush Propst. Auburn also in the mix, but he hasn't narrowed things totally down yet.

* Christian Turner, RB, Buford, Ga. - Three-star recruit's offers include Miami, N.C. State and Tennessee

* Derrik Allen, DB, Marietta, Ga. - Four-star top 50 national recruit is committed to Notre Dame

* Jamaree Salyer, OL, Atlanta, Ga. - Nation's No. 6 overall prospect was also the OL MVP after a completely dominant performance. I asked him about Alabama for a future story this week. It's his second trip to The Opening finals.

POSITIONAL MVPS

QB - Bo Nix (2019), Pinson Valley - Nix earned it over guys like 2018 Ohio State commit Emory Jones

RB - Cartavious Bigsby, Callaway, Ga - Just a class of 2020 recruit, Bigsby already has offers from Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and more.

WR - Jim Barnett III (unranked WR from Gainesville, Ga.)

OL - Jamaree Salyer

DL - Richard Jibunor, Athens, Ga. - Just a three-star recruit, the 6-foot-4, 206-pound Jibunor was practically unblockable around the edge. I'm surprised he didn't get an Opening invite today. It's coming. Jibunor likes Auburn a lot.

LB - Channing Tindall

DB - Chris Smith, Atlanta, Ga. - Three-star recruit has offers from Alabama, Auburn and Georgia, among others

OL/DL TOP FIVE

Probably the most fun part of these camps is watching the individual 1-on-1 offensive and defensive line drills.

Oxford 2019 offensive lineman Clay Webb really held his own and dominated for a lot of his reps. It's a surprise he wasn't one of the final five, but the offensive line group was good.

OL - Jalen Goss, Lowndes, Ga., Trey Hill, Warner Robins, Ga., Jalil Irvin, Stone Mountain, Ga., Kardell Thomas, Baton Rouge, La., Jamaree Salyer, Atlanta, Ga.

Hill is an Auburn target with a mean streak. He's fun to watch, unless you're a defensive lineman going up against him. Then you probably want to fight him after he's beaten you so bad. Irvin is an Auburn commit and was working at center. Thomas is a 2019 LSU commit who's nice enough to help you back up after he's driven you into the ground.

DL - Richard Jibunor, Athens, Ga., C.J Wright, Sylvania, Ga., Tru Thompson, Loganville, Ga.., Gregory Emerson, Jackson, Tenn., Brenton Cox, Stockbridge, Ga.

Thompson is a 2019 Florida State commit. Cox likes Alabama behind Georgia and Ohio State, but just visited Auburn. Wright's best offers now are Hampton and Mercer, so this is good exposure for an unranked player who outperformed other star recruits.

OTHER NOTES

So many guys to talk to, not quite enough time. Here are some quick notes from guys. These will turn into longer stories over the next few days.

Jackson-Olin four-star defensive lineman Coynis Miller is heading to Auburn for a few days. He then said he'll visit Alabama on Thursday. He was one of several recruits where communication dropped from Alabama after Mario Cristobal left for Oregon, but he said things are good now and it had no impact.

Alabama offered Sidney Lanier QB James Foster as a QB. They want to see him throw, so it's more of a camp offer. So that's a big reason why Missouri leads.

Mountain Brook RB Harold Joiner has a top three of Auburn, LSU and Ole Miss.

Watch out for Lanett 2019 DB Trikweze Bridges. Louisville was first to offer.

Looks like Auburn, Ole Miss and Georgia are coming harder for Cottondale four-star receiver Seth Williams at this point than Alabama.

Atlanta cornerback Christian Tutt believes the final 2 before he commits in a few months will be Alabama and Florida State. He really likes Jeremy Pruitt.

I'm kind of surprised more fights don't break out in some of the 1-on-1 events. They are extremely competitive. The linemen can keep their cool better than the receivers and defensive backs, though.

Auburn recruiting scoop, photos from Nike Opening camp in Atlanta (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn’s footprint was all over the Nike Opening camp in Atlanta — and it was a big one.

The Tigers had multiple recruiting targets awarded position MVPs or invited to the national Opening in Oregon later this year. Justyn Ross, Channing Tindall, Bo Nix, Richard Jibunor, Chris Smith and JJ Peterson were all Auburn-related targets recognized at the conclusion of the camp.

On top of that, several top performers placed Auburn at or near the top of their respective recruiting leaderboards. SEC Country interviews from the event led to plenty of scoops. Check it out below along with a camp photo gallery at the bottom.

A ton of photos in that link

4-star safety Quindarious Monday

He emerged as a vocal leader in most of the agility drills and participated with some of the top defenses in the 7-on-7 challenges. Monday has Auburn as his leader right now with Florida and Florida State. He said Kevin Steele and Greg Brown have made him a top priority. Monday is a big-time prospect to watch for Auburn.

Of note: he was wearing Florida gloves at the camp, though he said it was meant to keep people guessing.

4-star running back Asa Martin

Martin recently visited Florida, and the Gators shocked him.

They immediately leapt to the favorite to land the running back prospect from Decatur, Ala. Auburn and Michigan file in closely behind Florida, but Martin is certainly very high on the Gators. He doesn’t have a plan to decide imminently, instead opting to make a calculated decision.

Auburn’s in-state pull matters, Martin said.
