Auburn recruting: Official visit weekend update (SECCountry)

quote:

3-star LB Monty Rice (James Clemens/Madison, Ala.)

National ranking: No. 21 ILB, No. 607 overall

Early enrollee? Yes

Teams to watch: Georgia, Alabama, LSU

Other notes: Rice is Auburn’s ideal candidate to round out the 2017 linebacker group. He got on campus Thursday and will leave mid-day Friday to travel to Athens, Ga. He will officially visit Georgia throughout the remainder of the final contact-period weekend. Rice’s original plan was to OV to Georgia on Dec. 2 and then Auburn this weekend. Scheduling conflicts forced him to sever his last official visit opportunity into two trips. Rice decides on Dec. 12, so the day after he leaves Georgia.

Prediction: Georgia. LSU has picked up steam late. Alabama would almost be a guarantee if the Crimson Tide had a scholarship spot available. Auburn is probably No. 2, which explains the split OV weekend between the Tigers and Bulldogs. But Georgia has recruited Rice harder than Auburn throughout the process. Plus, his desire to alter his weekend to make sure he got a Georgia official hints at his lean.

quote:

Unranked TE Salvatore Cannella (Scottsdale C.C./Phoenix)

National ranking: No. 2 TE in junior college, No. 21 overall

Early enrollee? Yes

Teams to watch: Maryland, Texas

Other notes: Cannella has been a hot name this week because of Auburn’s December push for the 6-foot-6 tight end. He would bring a pass-catching element to the Auburn offense that has been lacking since C.J. Uzomah and really since Philip Lutzenkirchen. The Chicago native arrived around 5 p.m. Thursday. He’ll stay through Saturday morning before heading to Austin, Texas, to visit the Longhorns. That will be his third and final official visit. Cannella went to Maryland last weekend.

Prediction: Auburn. The SEC appeals to him. His relationship with Scott Fountain has blossomed rapidly since Fountain’s trip to Arizona on Dec. 1. It has to help the Tigers that Cannella stayed for nearly two days, whereas he’s taking a shortened overnighter to Texas. Maryland was the leader in the clubhouse before the Auburn and Texas offers came this week. The Tigers like their chances now. They should.

quote:

5-star OL Alex Leatherwood (Washington/Pensacola, Fla.)

National ranking: No. 2 OT, No. 6 overall

Commitment date: June 2, 2015

Early enrollee? Yes

Other notes: Leatherwood spent two days on Auburn’s campus, spending most of his time with offensive line coach Herb Hand. There’s no question Leatherwood is the offensive line target Auburn wants. To flip him from Alabama would be that much sweeter. Leatherwood left — before his good friend Nick Brahms arrived for his OV — to head to Gainesville. He’ll official visit to Florida for the remainder of the weekend.

Flip chances: Less than 5 percent, and that’s being generous. I buried the 5-star official visit news at the bottom of this primer because the Tigers would need a miracle to flip the Crimson Tide commit. Even if Leatherwood spurned Alabama, Florida — the team getting his final OV — has the best chance at securing the highly-rated offensive tackle. With that said, Leatherwood to Alabama is a sure thing in my book.

Auburn recruiting: LB commit Chandler Wooten ready to recruit, relax on lone official visit (SECCountry)

quote:

“I definitely wanted to go out strong,” Wooten said. “I put in a lot of work in the offseason. We had a successful season. I was proud of what we accomplished on and off the field. We became closer friends, and our coaches really helped us out a lot. I’m very proud of our season.”

Now he’s turning his attention to his new team in Auburn.

Wooten said he has grown close to Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams as well as the Tigers’ other linebacker commitments — KJ Britt and Tadarian Moultry.

He feels that family connection with Williams and his fellow future Tigers at linebacker. His official visit this weekend will put him one step closer to early enrollment and spring practice on the Plains.

“I can’t wait to get there this weekend on my official and hang out with (Williams) some more,” Wooten said. “When we had my in-home visit, it felt like he was part of the family. That’s how we greet each other. We call each other family. I can’t wait to learn from him not only as a football player, but as a young man.”

Shea Dixon from LSU 247 site on Narcisse

quote:

Lowell Narcisse … QB … Getting Narcisse in this weekend for his final official visit before the dead period is huge for the Tigers. Given their is not a new offensive coordinator in place right now, Narcisse has put some real thought into his decision before things are made final. He made a visit to Memphis last month and then followed that up with an official visit to Auburn last weekend. Auburn is a real player here and they are pressing hard to get him flipped. It’s worth noting he’s been committed there once before. But the silver lining for LSU in Auburn’s push is that they are also closing in on Baylor transfer quarterback Jarrett Stidham, which could put a wrinkle in their plans to get Narcisse. This weekend will be about selling Narcisse and his family on his role in LSU’s offense moving forward.

Sonny Shipp in response to question about OC & Narcisse

quote:

Narcisse knows where LSU is with Kiffin but I think more importantly is he knows the direction LSU wants to go with the offense and likes that better than the thought of playing in a pro-style. I think this weekend is more about tying up loose ends more than anything else.

Sonny Shipp on JLee's update

quote:

My opinion hasn't changed from the Wrap on Wednesday. I think LSU will be in good shape come Sunday and this weekend solidifies things. He thinks he's a perfect fit for the type of offense Orgeron wants to run and being close to home to his family and is the cherry on top.

LSU people seem pretty sure he will stick with them. Considering only positive news for AU so far is from JLee I think we will miss on Narcisse. Though I do think lack of OC is really helping AU right now and I don't think Stidham plays as big of a role as some think

Love what we're doing on the OL obviously, assuming Ashley sticks. Wish we could find a JUCO OT that could come in ready to play right away next year.

Would like another receiver.

QB, and the class overall, pretty much all comes down to Stidham.

LB looking good.

We really need to find a couple of DL because you can never have enough and a big time corner but it appears that's not going to happen.

If we can get Stidham this can be a good class. Without him though, unless we pull some DL shockers, it's going to be very average.

Overall I expect to get him but underwhelm at DL and CB and overall think they class will end up around a B-.
