Clemson has done much better than us with the 3* diamond in the rough type players, and have even benefited in guys that we rejected (Vic Beasley, Jayron Kearse).
Those types of players were staples of Tuberville's great defenses, and we've become very good at turning away those types of players (Jarrad Davis UF, Chris Westry UK)
As far as Clemson's sustained success with the multiple 10 win seasons, put Auburn in the ACC with 9-10 "should win" games a year and put Clemson in the SEC West and I think you'd see similar results on both sides.
Its easy for them to be a good program. They don't have to try. We have to fight for it.
Watson is the only reason they're currently a NC contender though. Watson is the best college QB since Cam and Luck. Once he leaves they go back to a program that is basically good by default because of their weak conference.

We didn't turn away Jarrad Davis, he flipped to Florida almost immediately after staff was fired
Chris Westry was replaced by Jeremiah Dinson who also played at a high level as a FR and is a better fit. We didn't get shafted on that

the same can be said for most, if not all, of the other schools in the top 10 of the recruiting rankings. Otherwise they can't sign big enough classes to get INTO the top 10, usually.

Alabama has lost 7 players since SPRING.
Adonis Thomas 175th (2011)(4 Star)
Charles May (4 Star) made it a few months
Christian Bell (3 star) 1 Semester, now at Wiskie
Daylon Charlot (4 Star) 4 star, stayed one year
Shawn Burgess-Becker (4 Star) Played in 13 games as a freshman, now at Central Florida
Maurice Smith (Graduate, now at UGA)
Kendall Sheffield (5 Star), stayed one year.
If this was Auburn, we would be in complete meltdown mode.

I can understand drops of 25-50 just because others really show out, but Stove dropped some 100+ spots with no real explanation. That was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen

Has visited before but looks to be UF or Vols right now. Not sure we have space for him right now unless we miss out on all 4 of Wilder/Ignont/Taylor/Britt
