Who stands the best chance of getting called up this season?
Posted on 5/31/17 at 12:24 pm to Porter Osborne Jr
Sims and Newcomb because of how bad our SPs have been. Brett Cumberland has been the hottest hitter this past month in the minors. He's currently slashing .277/.463/.571 in low A and is probably gonna gonna be at high A in the next week.

I'd feel so much better about Newk if he could just give me 2-3 straight starts where he goes 6-7 innings. He can't come up and go 4 1/3 or 5 IP like he has been doing in the minors. His stuff is great and he has gotten so much better with control, but he has to last longer.

Sims was about to be called up but he's had a couple of bad starts in a row. I think Newcomb will be a dominate bullpen arm because of that same reason. At this point in the season our starters haven't had many bright spots. I don't think either Sims or Newcomb are any worse than what we have right now.

Totally agree. I'm content with Sims and Newcomb coming up and just having Wisler/Jackson on speed dial ready to go 2-3 innings.

Not that it matters, but Maitan is now 17 (his bday is in February).
It's kinda crazy to think that he is only 3 years younger than Ozzie. It feels like Ozzie has been around forever.

Acuña just having your average 4-5 night with 2 SBs, average now over .400 in AA.

Acuna is going to force Coppy's hand here soon. Age be damned, the kid can hit

He's doing Andruw Jones things right now. Nobody does Andruw Jones things.

Man, I wish Birmingham could get the G-Braves. Would be a natural fit.
Posted on 6/1/17 at 12:09 pm to SummerOfGeorge
Andruw only played 38 games in AA and hit 12 home runs with a slash of .369/.432/.675 and 12 SBs.
Acuna is at 21 games in AA slashing .415/.467/.634 with 12 SBs. The only thing lacking is the HRs.

We really may have another Trout/Harper/Bryant type player on our hands with Acuna. He has a 201 wRC+. In AA. And he's 19. That is insane. He will be in the majors by August.

I keep wanting to hold off on him, but he's 19 and doing this in AA, in the Southern League (as opposed to doing it out West in high altitude).
They need to give him plenty of time and everything, but at some point dude is just better than everyone else. We aren't QUITE there yet, but it's getting close.

Agreed. How long does he need to have a .375+ BA (it's hovering around .420 right now) in AA before you send him up to AAA? All-Star break?
Obviously if he cools off, you leave him where he is. But if he somehow keeps this pace.. AAA can't be that far off for him.

At this rate if a spot in the OF opens up for a long period (trade/injury), Acuña could make the jump from AA straight to the MLB.

quote:Wouldn't surprise me if it worked out like that. When the season started I thought he'd open up as our starting RF in 2018 (And that was thought to be too aggressive by some people), now I'm pretty sure we'll see him up this year so he's a little more seasoned when 2018 opens up. Only question now is if he's up in late July/August if we move one of our corner outfielders or if we just hold off until September call-ups.
Acuña could make the jump from AA straight to the MLB.
I'm also really excited to see where he'll be in the mid-season top prospect updates, you rarely see somebody go from bottom of the top 100 to top 20 in just a few months but I think it's warranted.

Yea - the AA to MLB jump used to be commonplace before all the service time stuff made most guys spend a little time in AAA.
He was already basically identified as a guy whose talents were elite, and now he has tons of evidence to back it up. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the 10-20 range at all.

Dude, I really appreciate you with this thread. I used to track all the minor league Braves players when I was way younger and had more time. It makes me feel like I kid again.
