I moved to Arkansas about 3 years ago. Can someone fill me in on the hatred for Gus Malzahn? Seems like he has been successful wherever he's coached at. Thanks.

He's done less with more at Auburn. What makes you think he would do better here where the recruiting is a lot tougher?

We have already seen what he can do here. And Tulsa. And State. And Shiloh. And Springdale.

I talked about this in another thread but Auburn isn't as easy of a place to win as some are making it out to be. Remember they were winless in conference the year before he got there. I don't know if he would win a title, but I think he would be a very low floor/risk choice with a very high ceiling

He has his supporters. As this thread will show.

That's the problem though.

Let me take you back to the days of yesteryear. Houston Nutt is the head football coach at Arkansas and while he has had some success the fans are beginning to get restless. Which is a problem because Nutt has close ties to major boosters in the Little Rock area.

Enter the golden year of Springdale High School football under Gus. It was arguably the second best high school team in Arkansas history and can stake a legit claim to being the best high school team in the country that year. This is before Springdale opened up a second high school and I believe SHS was the largest high school in the state at that time.

And they were loooooaded with talent that year. They were solid on both sides of the ball and had good special teams. Not only that, Gus was one of the first people in the country to be running the hurry up power spread offense. To the teams he played, not just here in Arkansas but California and Louisiana as well, it was like seeing the wishbone for the first time in the 60's.

Nutt had to sign those Springdale players... and that meant hiring Gus as OC and giving up his beloved play calling duties on offense. They hated each other. At the end of the season Gus left for another job and the Nutt era at Arkansas imploded not long after.

Nutt supporters blamed Gus. Gus supporters, members of very powerful Springdale based super church, blamed everyone associated with Arkansas. It got ugly.

It was extremely bitter after Gus got hired at Auburn, with members of the so called "Springdale Mafia" (the super church that Gus was a member of) ardently supporting Auburn over the University of Arkansas... which is only ten minutes down the road from said church. Which for the record, is in no way, shape, or form, a hideous eyesore when you drive past it.

The flames have died down but after going through a walk through hell covered in gasoline having two huge booster groups in an all out war the fan base as a whole, with the exception of ardent Gus Bus backers, has shied away from sticking our genitals into that particular meat grinder again.

Plus, and this is meant in the nicest way possible, Gus and his wife are really kind of creepy.

The bottom line is that while he has his share of supporters Gus is about as popular around the state as Hillary Clinton. With the exception that Democrats will hold their nose and vote for Hillary.

What I said in the original thread -

LINK

quote:

I originally thought people disliked Gus because of their weird hatred of anything from NWA. However, when you delve more into the Springdale 5 and Mustain/Nutt debacle you realize that there is much more to that hatred.

Gus is Houston Nutt with a better offense. He is a slimy human being. He used high school players to get a job at Arkansas. The worst part is that Gus plays the whole innocent "aww shucks" country boy role. At least with Petrino you had an upfront a-hole.

There are a shite ton of better coaches than Gus out there for us to get when Bielema is gone.

I just hope that Bielema leaves without drama. It'd be nice to not have a golden handcuff or motorcycle moment. I also think we need to go get a young up and come

I know it's after a loss, but go read the Auburn board right now and see how they feel about ole Gus. Their fears seem to confirm themselves over and over again, and rightly so.

Now imagine that even with all this knowledge we have of Gus and his tendencies/stubbornness/ego ON the field, he's just as much if not worse of a human OFF the field.

Oh yeah, and despite all the instances and all the evidence, there's still a faction of AR fans and -even worse - big time donors that want him to be our coach at all cost.

2012 recruiting ranking: 11th nationally

2013 - 12-2 (7-1 SEC) - NC appearance due to 3 miracle plays
2013 Recruiting ranking: 10th nationally

2014 - 8-5 (4-4 SEC)
2014 recruiting ranking: 6th nationally

2015 - 7-6 (2-6 SEC)
2015 recruiting ranking: 8th nationally

2016 - 8-5 (5-3 SEC)
2016 recruiting ranking: 9th nationally

2017 - 5-2 (3-1 SEC) - just lost to ORGERON
2017 recruiting ranking: 9th nationally

So the numbers above show that he hasn't improved recruiting at AU above their norm of about 10th nationally, but has fallen well below the success rate and W-L column to be expected of multiple top 10 classes in a row. The team he just lost to Orgeron (who got destroyed by MSU and Troy) with is 100% his, and doesn't have a class below #10. AU still has to play TAMU, Bama, and UGA and could easily lose 3 more to go 7-5, 8-4 at best, AGAIN with all that talent.

It's pretty easy to see why he'd fail miserably here, given our recruiting history not even being CLOSE to those results. He does less with more talent at a place with purely top 10 classes, what about our 25-35 ranked classes? And there's STILL idiots that want him here!

The Good Reverend has a short memory. On another board at another time i recall vividly his extreme dislike for Gus Malzahn. On the other hand, he was high on CBB's abilities to recruit and competing spirit. All the while of my expert warnings defending CBB as one fielding Petrino's less than superb athletes. Of course I knew better and I knew better concerning the Good coaching abilities of Gus Malzahn. Gus has proven he belongs in the SEC while AR Hogs have not. Ark has the stench of a hog pen in the elite SEC having a place in the lower quartile of existence virtually every year of 25. Ark should move to anothe conference or gain a PROVEN winner football coach where they are out there and some currently unemployed. Gus is a good man whom I would be pleased to save a fledging Ark football program. ALL in my opinion. (which BTW is right there with the experts)

It's usually the high-end brainy types that love Gus, I'm not surprised in the least.

ETA- downvoted for shitty sentence structure, misspelled (and missed altogether) words, incoherent content, and calling oneself an "expert," ALL while saying Gus is a good man and coach
