Next up are the 6 - 1 Cougars coached by former Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson.

Still early in the season but they are at #60 in the RPI (Hogs are at #22).

I haven't seen any of their games this year but their schedule has been weak with wins over George Mason, Cornell, Vermont etc. They lost to LSU 85 - 65 in Baton Rouge.

Hogs have bigger guards and similar size in the post.

Here is their starting lineup and season stats.

#32 Gray JR 6-2 19.4 PPG
#25 Robinson SO 6-1 4.6 PPG
#21 Dotson SR 6-5 13.9 PPG
#15 Davis JR 6-7 12.7 PPG 7.4 RPG
#00 Knowles SR 6-10 10.1 PPG

Gray (14-31, 45%) and Dotson (20-37, 54%) are their best three point shooters and they have a guard that comes off the bench (VanBeck - 11-19, 58%) that based on stats is their only other three point threat.

If anyone else has any insight on this team or has watched them this season I'd love to hear it. I think we matchup well but they have the ability to exploit our greatest weakness which is 3-pt defense.

They look like a pretty high scoring team, but like you said they've played a weak schedule. LSU held them to 20 points below their average. We just have to play with the same intensity we've seen the past three games.

Our perimeter defense has gotten better as the new players adjust to the system and build chemistry. Mike has said that he wants players to be quick, but not in a hurry. The first few games they were playing in a hurry and making a lot of mistakes. We were lucky to get out of those first few games with only one loss. Now the game has slowed down for some of the new guys and we're starting to see them play as a cohesive unit.

My bad Pio. I have a three-month old kid so I'm up at a lot of weird hours and was researching our next opponent.

Either way I think it's a good matchup for us - our guards are bigger and more athletic and Hannahs is finally found his stroke from downtown.

This team is starting to gel, all of the players have shown they grasp and understand the motion offense, which is still a thing of beauty to watch when ran properly.

The biggest concern for me was that Beard would be the next madden and think he was more than he is, one player like this disrupts the entire offense, kudos to him playing within the system. Also Kingsley has done well in adjusting to the teams need of him less to be a scorer. The high/low game could be worked more, but it's hard to pass up the easy first scoring opportunity than the pass back out which can lead to Moses down low for reentry after the up screen.

Last night was the most fun I'd had watching the Hogs in a long time.

I loved seeing true freshman come off the bench and show solid fundamentals and energy. Seems for years we've had two or three guys that can score and then one tool guys around them.

Hazen looked good coming off the bench really wish he'd pulled off that alley-oop. Barford and Macon are ahead of where I thought they'd be as JUCO guys. Sonny Weems was the top JUCO player in the country when he came in and it took him a full year to adjust.

He still takes a head scratching three every now and then, but for the most part he has really taken to his role quite well this year. Maybe last season was a humbling experience for him overall. Not just on the court, but life as well. Definitely can see a difference in his play overall.

Yeah, the problem with the game has been the shift in focus to scoring as an individual compared to scoring via the offense. The NCAA has made several changes to the way the game is officiated but they still haven't fully grasped this concept as being the root issue which obviously starts long before the athletes ever make it to college.

I like the direction of the program if more of the types of guys on this team are continued to be brought in while the BJs, Maddens, Fortsons, etc are left to go elsewhere, their talent and scoring ability on their own is useless over the course of the game if it only causes more disruption than anything else for the team.

Yeah, those threes are fine within the framework of what Mike allows his players to do tho.

He doesn't tell guys not to shoot or don't look to score, the key is not to do this at critical times in the game where you take it upon yourself to abandon the offense and try to do it on your own. Which is what I was afraid he would end up doing after seeing him his freshman year.

The reason why a few of those shots are fine is the point of the strategy is your going to get more shots per game than your opponent wants while forcing your opponent to take more shots than they are accustomed to, similar to what the hunh tries to accomplish in football, use tempo to increase scoring opportunities and take teams out of their comfort zone.

In fairness to Beard he is our best shooter from 3 so far this season.

Beard 8 - 20 40%
Hannahs 12 - 33 36%
Barford 6 - 16 38%
Macon 9 - 29 31%

CJ is hitting 61% of his. Got to give the kid credit. I really like CJ Jones.

Really like the young guys, Bailey and Jones specifically. Both will be very good here.

Good win 84 - 72. Houston got hot from downtown a couple times when looked like Hogs were gonna pull away early. Defense was there though wasn't like they were hitting uncontested threes.

Barford dissapeared tonight but Macon and Hannahs took over the scoring.

Kingsley asserted himself in the post a couple times hopefully we see more of that going forward.

WPS! Cant' take wins like these for granted, glad to see the Hogs at 7 - 1.

I had no idea Houston was the #1 3 shooting team in the nation so far this year. They can drain it.

Dodson was hitting some ridiculous shots and making it look easy.

This was a game that could have gotten away from us quick if we weren't scoring well.

Had a chance to blow the game open in the 1st half up by 14. Quick trigger Mike had to put the starters back in when we were rolling.

This is the shite that drives me crazy with Mike, it's like he's not watching the same game I am most of the time. I never understand his substitution philosophy
