thoughts on whether or not we land Malik or not?

With basketball season quickly approaching and most already writing this season off as a bust, who believes we pull in one of the greatest athletes to come out of the state in years? I hope we land him but honestly have no idea what our pitch would be other than proximity to home and playing time (which everyone would offer).

I don't think he comes to Arkansas. Just a feeling I have, hope I'm wrong. I think he is UK or UNC bound.

i'm sure i'm thinking of this in some way incorrectly but i don't get why, if you're not a long time fan, you'd want to go specifically to uk, nc, etc.
you can go wherever (or at least many places, including arkansas) and get your one season in and move on. it's not like he would become invisible here and pro teams wouldn't be interested.
what's the big thrill of going to ky when you're a top recruit like him? i guess winning but if you have no care for the team really then it shouldn't really matter, you're just there to get to the nba anyway.

Big blue hype, play with all your AAU boys etc etc. I can see the draw if you're familiar with modern youth basketball.
Myself, I'm with you. I'd want to be a Mcfadden, Portis, Joe Johnson type. He does not strike me as that whatsoever.
He's been classy about it, but I don't think he winds up here in the end. I think he would have already committed.
Seems like we never win when it gets this drawn out.

That's what I think. He can be even a bigger star here that will not be surrounded by a multitude of other five stars. I don't understand the UK one and done fascination myself.

They've been in the elite 8 like every year but one since Cal has been there?
What makes yall think he is all hog? Just curious, I really have no clue, just think he would have committed here by now.

well i included 'winning' in my other post but ky has a champ in 2012 the one before in 1998. i'm not taking away from them, they are awesome but it's not like they're winning the championship every year. besides, do ncaa basketball champs get rings?
Posted on 11/3/15 at 5:40 pm to piggilicious
Yeah. They have 1 more ring than us in the last 20 years

doesn't matter that much, 1 and done, good or bad

I would like to think that we would, but I have been conditioned by our highest ranked players being sucessfully wooed by someone else that they think is sexier.
If I was putting money down on it, I would put it on the side of 'no'.

Maybe if he got the idea that CMA would be able to put at least two or three talented players around him to at least give them a chance to make the tourney and advance a few rounds....
If he thinks we have no chance of being competitive even with himself on the team, then I think he goes to Kentucky or some other program that is perceived to have a solid chance at an NC or final four appearance.
It's just one year, but he can be guaranteed of going to the tournament with several teams and probably getting past several rounds. That is a big thrill that he will only have one shot at.
Don't want to waste that one chance and end up in the NIT.
If CMA can get just a couple guys to go with Monk, maybe we swing him. That's probably one thing he is waiting to see.

That means Mike would have to recruit players outside of his family ties

That was the year they landed the last "once in a generation" "can't miss" "greatest athlete in Arkansas history" etc Archie Goodwin who was mediocre at best on the court, torpedo in the locker room...

Yet we've made the dance once since 2008. UK has made the final 4 4 times since 2011.
Name a school that stands a better chance at winning it all than UK recently. Certainly not Arkansas. Just because UK doesn't win it every year doesn't mean they don't stand the best odds at the beginning of the season. They are the best program in the country right now. That's why recruits go there.

No its not.
They go there because the belief is spread starting in AAU ball that these guys are being drafted high because of Cal.
Same reason why these types of guys went to Memphis State.
All Kentucky does is allow him to sign more of them at a time because lets face it, no one wants to spend any of their life in Memphis.
Same reason why Bama has a depth chart on the defensive side full of 5*s, because Saban "gets them" to the NFL, yet they haven't exactly lit up the QB recruiting outside of "game managers" lately...
