Back in 2010 when conference realignment went all haywire, there was some subtle flirting and rumors of Arkansas to the Big 12 that never ended up happening, obviously. Well, given the current split within the conference on if they should expand or not, Arkansas presents a perfect solution. All of the Big 12 coaches have recently weighed in on the topic, and although many were indifferent several were in support of it most notable Bob Stoops, and Bill Snyder. Of those against, Gary Patterson was the most outspoken saying he's "already done the east coast west coast thing."

Arkansas, though, stands alone in that it appears the Big 12, if they expand, is unlikely to add another Texas school, making the Razorbacks the next best thing. They are a reasonable distance to all schools in the conference, not causing some of the nightmares for traveling that a school like UCF would. So adding them would be relatively painless for travel (looking at you Patterson) as Fayetteville is in "Big 12 country" and the Hogs also have history with some schools in the conference. Arkansas remains one of Texas's traditional rivals going back to when they were both members of the old Southwest Conference before bolting for the SEC.

The Big 12 is on life support until the other P5 conferences decide how to divide them up.

they could be enticed to NOT have to face LSU, Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss etc every year.

This is part of the problem with their conference. Their mentality is to take the path of least resistance to get their participation trophy. Even if we went to that conference and dominated every year we would know we couldn't cut it in the SEC west. I would rather win the west every once in a while and know we really accomplished something great.

I didn't click the link, but I love how these articles are always written from a fanboy's purview (example -- "it just makes sense!") and completely oblivious to the economic and historical realities of the situation, as well as the dynamics of the relationship between UA and UT. The myopia and ignorance of this line of thought, especially when we had a front row seat to the last time Texas imploded a conference, is utterly astounding. Only a UT and/or Big 12 supporter could be this oblivious to the present day irrelevance and reduced state of the Big 12 conference.

Yeah, we lived through UT's demolition of the SWC 25 years ago and then watched 5 years ago as they did it again to the Big 12 and thought, "man, I want me some of that!" These are the same people who think Texas A&M would come back. Pathetic.

Okay, I made the mistake of clicking the link just to read the comments -- the author is a complete moron.

I agree it's highly unlikely
However, if Nebraska were to grow tired of being 9-4 every year in the very weak Big 10 West, I think a power move would be to try to bring in Arkansas and Nebraska like stated. I just looked at it more from a standpoint of what the Big12 needs to do to remain a conference, because at the rate its going I don’t know that it lasts another 6-7 years. From Arkansas’s standpoint I think playing schools actually reasonably close, teams that have actual history with Arkansas, and provide an easier route to big bowls would be appealing. Although I definitely agree the Big12 is unstable at the moment but bringing in two well established programs would solve that. I see your point on recruiting too,but in return you’d also get even more exposure in recruit fertile Texas, rather than just one game a year against A&M.

quote:

Again, I agree it is very unlikely, but I was looking at it at a "what the big12 needs point of view" not that it’s necessarily best for y’all. But I do think there are some perks that it would present for you, although like you point out there are plenty of perks to being in SEC.

Terrible idea. It never really made sense, but it makes even less sense now that Mizzou and TAMU are in the SEC.

Join the Big 12 and play Texas*!

Last year one of my threads trolled WVU and OU fans into thinking we might actually ever leave the SEC. I'm claiming the OP's link as byproduct of that troll.

The only part that makes any sense IS the geographic part. But it's all about the money these days, it takes precedence over 'sense'. Making too much money in the SEC.

What road trips? We're not in the Big 12, dumbass.

If you don't understand geography though, I'm not sure I can help you.
