She really is determined to leave a "top 5 in the U.S." art museum in Bentonville.

IMO Crystal Bridges stacks up really well compared to the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. It's a really impressive collection.

For perspective, her two paintings cost roughly FOUR TIMES as much as the expansion starting soon at the WAC.
That's crazy. You could build a larger and better performing arts center than the WAC for what she spent on those two works. That just blows my mind.

The art world is nuts and in my view a complete waste of $/ bubble involving the super rich ego's. I just read somebody bought a painting for $300 million which quite pathetic.

I'd rather see such folks spend the $ building performing art centers

According to that link, it was purchased by a museum, so I don't understand how that's "involving the super rich ego's."
And it's most definitely not a bubble. Works of art have been in high demand since prehistoric times. I think creating and enjoying art is a basic instinct of humankind. Demand for art, especially works created by masters, is not something that is going to vanish, it's only going to increase.
Performing art is great, but it's impermanent. It can't be viewed 24 hours a day. It is, by its essence, much less accessible than most visual arts. For example, one ticket to the Metropolitan Opera in NYC might cost $100 or more. Entrance to the Metropolitan Museum of Art costs as little as $1 (suggested price of $25, but you can pay whatever you want). It takes more than a full day to experience everything in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And that's just one of many museums in NYC focusing on visual arts.
Likewise, in NWA, it's free to go to Crystal Bridges, but if you want to see frequent performances at the WAC, you'll be spending way more money. Rich people who donate their collections to museums are essentially subsidizing museums for the masses to enjoy.

Ridiculous VanGogh to Rothko exhibit now happening at Crystal Bridges. This is an insanely high quality collection, in addition to the quality that is already there.

Crystal Bridges is one of only four galleries in the world that will play host to the show, set to remain on display at the museum through June 1.

This entire year's exhibits are insane, but this VAnGogh to Rothko is particularly impressive.
Next up we have:
A gamefish art exhibit (admittedly, probably more interesting to me than others).
Followed by an exhibit on Warhol's nature painting (who knew?). Then a dedicated Andrew Wyeth exhibit. Then a dedicated Alfred Maurer exhibit.
I'm so happy with the mainly modern focus of this year's offerings.

Getting kinda cray cray. But I bet she can't even spend the interest on her money.

One of the best collections of American art in the world continues to get better. And it just happens to be located right here in Arkansas.
As first reported by New York Times’ ArtsBeat Blog, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has acquired some hugely significant works recently, including Jasper Johns’ well known 1983 work Flag, and four works by influential artist Louise Bourgeois, including one of her 30-foot spider sculptures titled Maman.

Maman is pretty awesome. I can't wait to see it. Kids will freak out.

She needs to start shoppin for some fancy upgrade toys for BWA and Razorback Stadium. Thats the stuff that lasts and retains value.

I think of the buildings they could build with the money that is being spent on individual artworks.
The entire Walton Arts Center expansion and renovation on Dickson Street is $23 million.
For the cost of one painting, she could have paid for that entire project, and upgraded it.

Which leads into my next thought. The Waltons want their new Bentonville performing arts center to be grand. Imagine the funding they'll drop on that thing. I wouldn't surprised to see another "starchitect" designing it. It will likely dwarf the WAC in design, amenities and architectural significance. The Walton Family Foundation and Walmart Foundation will be dropping $$$ for that one, too.
I'm sure it will be impressive when it is built in another 2-3 years.
