Another feature on Coach Kelly and the Bruins

Grantland piece on LR Pulaski Academy

Coach Kevin Kelly of Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, instructs his players to never punt, never field punts, and only do onside kickoffs, and he claims that math backs up his innovative philosophy. Grantland spent some time with Kelly and his players to learn more about the coach behind the team that once scored 29 points before its opponent touched the ball.

I remember the last article about never punting but the onside kick every time thing is new.

It doesn't hurt his math that PA has significantly more talent than most of their opponents.

by more talent you mean more wealthy white kids to pay top dollar for coaches and facilities

If the PA kids integrated into public schools, could you imagine how good teams like LR Central could be?

I think the talent there gets overrated a bit and his actual coaching ability and superb staff get overlooked by the average fan. I think He could take his style and staff to a larger Public school in central Arkansas and be very, very good.

His staff is made up of guys that would be better head coaches than 90% of what's in central Arkansas right now.

I keep waiting for this style to be tried out at the college level. The statistics are there to back the theory. It radically changes play calling options when you have 4 downs instead of 3

LR Central
Had a medicore coach my freshman year there and still went 10-0. Lost to Fort Smith South in the first round of the playoffs though, despite shitting on them in the regular season. I'll never forget that game. The whole game just felt weird. It was a 9-6 type game.

when we played @ central back in the day i'll never forget the feeling of pulling in that stadium. you felt like you were pulling into a prison yard. there's this tiny gate barely wide enough for a school bus and these tower things on each wall that look like sniper towers

all our fans were told to follow the team bus and park inside the actual stadium. its a very eery feeling.

Yeah, no. I don't think that would translate well to the SEC. Big 12, probably, but not here. I think I actually heard him say in another interview that a college AD would be crazy to hire him as a coach and let him run his style of play.

people get too hung up on what will or won't work in the SEC. the only real constant for the teams on top is talent on the lines up front, other than that we've seen spread offenses, power running, pro style, single wing, and option focused offenses(spread option but it's that zone read option shite still) all have success when others said you can't do that in the SEC.

of course they would, any AD that would hire a highschool football coach to take over a college coaching job with a completely different approach to the game is obviously crazy. But lots of people are crazy and have success because of it.

I agree to a certain extent, but we're not just talking about offenses, defenses or going for it on forth down more than most. We're talking about a guy that only punts about 5% of the time. I think his attitude would change on kickoffs because of the larger average field position change in college vs. high school.
Hell, I have no idea if it would work or not, but it would be exciting as hell to watch in college.

Well, it works damn fine on Xbox. Four national titles in a row speak for themselves.

I probably need to stop posting or I'll hit my yearly quota of 19 in one thread.

There is a signifixant advantage in play cslling for four downs with your offense. Most teams arent prepared for it to happen they're used to 3 plays and done. Secondly 3rd and long isnt necessarily a limited play calling down anymore. Plus you can divert practice time away feom punting to thw offense.
