OT- the Chain-ing of Dickson St.

As some have heard, there are multiple chains either heading to Dickson Street, or planning to head there soon. It is a byproduct of high real estate prices and a density of population that makes "walk-in" versions of these types of stores/restaurants viable.
On one hand, Dickson St has become a victim of its own revitalization, which means they did a lot of things right to restore the area and increase population density.
On the other hand, local restaurants and stores seem to be getting priced out of the real estate market.
Taco Bell is opening their "Cantina" concept there shortly, which is sort of crazy, considering the only other ones exist in Austin, Las Vegas, and a couple of other large cities. The menu is different, and you can buy alcohol there, including mixed drinks.
Starbucks is eyeing a spot at Dickson & College Ave.
Waffle House opened one of their only "urban format" restaurants down there several years ago. Same for Jimmy John's and Q-doba.
What do you think about what is happening down there?
I think it is just the natural progression. I remember Dickson having dilapidated storefronts in sections, then undergoing a boom filling up the storefronts and rehabbing buildings, followed by condo development, and then student apartment infill. I suppose this is the next step in evolution.

I've been wondering when someone is going to buy the old AQ Chicken building on College

The lifeblood of Dickson is booze but food keeps the lights on. I think eventually the places that have only one or the other will be priced out by places that blend both.
JJs is the perfect model of a Dickson business. That place make a money hand over fist because it is a good blend of both.
Ultimately if someone would just replace that massive bookstore and its gigantic parking lot Dickson would seemingly double in size. It's that damn property that fractures the area

Raise your hand if you are old enough to remember weatherman Ken Rank doing AQ commercials.
I was just a kid but I remember.

I mean, Taco Bell is higher quality than Flying Burrito . Seriously tho was there any late night Mexican food on Dickson before Qdoba? I know of Los Bobos, but that's basically a taco truck and cash only. Taco Bell is gonna make a lot of money on that location. It's unfortunate a local couldn't establish a great Mexican spot on Dickson. Flying Burrito closes at 10 and while it's not that bad, it is certainly comparable in quality to Taco Bell.

I remember Ken when he was known as Commander Ken on radio station KLCO in Poteau, OK, late 70's
He had some hot groupie chicks that were his entourage when he did his remotes from local businesses in Fort Fresh. They were called his "cuties"

whats the story behind that damn book store? it makes no sense with the value of land it is taking up.

It makes no sense to have the campus bookstore on Dickson?
That spot sucks anyway. Can't imagine any food or beverage place doing that great all the way up there.
Finns is the only thing up there that has ever lasted, and that's because of $5 pitchers and $.50 wings.

The Dickson Street Bookshop? Damn, dude, talk about taking away something that's unique about Dickson Street.

Someday it will happen. That bookstore will be razed and 4-stories of condos with a Chuy's and a Starbucks in the bottom will replace it, but another little piece of the soul of this town will go with it.
I'm afraid it's inevitable, but many people love that little bookstore.

Is Dickson Street Bookshop goes away, that will be a tragedy. I suppose it IS inevitable, though. But damn... talk about taking away an institution.

They still do that? Just on Mondays, or something like that? That was a bit of a tradition for my friends back in the late 90s/early 00s.

The last time i looked at a taco bell caninta menu, it was just regular taco bell food... with beer.
Not sure why people keep saying it's a different menu, i think Fayetteville Flyer is posting this information.

That place is my dream spot to own a bar on Dickson. You could make an unbelievable rooftop patio up there, and the inside with all it's weird rooms could be a very unique bar

Probably because Taco Bell's Cantina concept has a different menu. Not sure where you're getting the "Taco Bell Cantina" menu you are referencing.
Fayetteville will be the smallest city by far to get one right now.
Here's an article about the Las Vegas one that opened in November:
quote:
The menu features tapas-style sharing plates of nachos, quesadillas, and chicken fingers alongside a wide-range of customizable slushies from the restaurant's "Freeze Wall." Guests can choose flavors like margarita, piña colada, or berry blast and later decide to add liquor, ranging from tequila to spiced rum.

Oh. Yeah, I get it. I agree with that. That's a property that could be filled-in. That, and at least the frontage along the WAC parking lot would make Dickson double what it is right now.
There was a proposal for a big ugly condo tower with groundfloor retail there about 10 years ago. There were some crazy-arse proposals for Dickson Street back then, including a 10-story condo tower on top of Georges.

Yeah. Campus Bookstore and the laundrymat there suck. Clubhaus is my gym, though.

Not the best either if we're honest.
I'm saying that as a former member.

I walked my arse in one... looked at the menu, and walked my arse out.
It's literally, same crappy tacos, burrito's, and I assume other taco bell slop they server at the restaurants. The only think i don't remember hearing advertised on the radio was chicken nuggets. Not sure why they had those.
Here ya go:
Fayetteville Flyer can jazz this thing up all they want, i'm telling ya, it's basically a taco bell that serves beer.

Nobody is really excited about a damned Taco Bell Cantina on Dickson Street.
You're suggesting that Fayetteville Flyer is lying, when the post you're replying to has an article from a national publication that includes a description of a other-than-standard menu.
You're weird.
ETA: Your own damned picture shows a menu where the far-right 1/4 is stuff that isn't "standard Taco Bell" menu items.
