Screw NWA. The hills are pretty in the fall, but a pain in the arse the rest of the time.
Some folks are okay, a bunch are assholes, and too many are yankees.

Unfortunately, I still think that Whole Hog has the best Q up here. Lucky Luke's has an awesome sandwich called the Mennecke that is pretty awesome. There's a place out on Hwy 16 called the BBQ Place that is really good but I don't get out there enough. There's a new place in the Yacht Club that only smokes on the weekends that I haven't tried out yet, but that's supposed to be good.

I actually like Ed's as a place to eat, but the Q isn't great and the ribs (which they don't remove the membranes from) are an insult.

I don't think any of it holds up to Craig's, which is sort of my Arkansas Gold Standard.

Thanks. This is a good report. Little Rock is killing it with the local restaurants lately. I keep waiting for the big correction -

Fat Daddy's is horrible unless you like pork with your black pepper. I actually think Shadden's BBQ outside of Marvell is the best BBQ in the state. I live in Fayetteville now and have never had good BBQ from a restaurant here other than maybe Lucky Luke's when they first opened, since they moved it has been horrible at best.

Penguin Eds is possibly the most inconsistent BBQ place I have ever been, sometimes it is halfway decent others it is atrocious.

Have you tried Reno's in the Yacht Club (Food trailer area on College). Also, give the BBQ Place on Huntsville Road a try sometime. I'd be curious to hear your take on those two.

i just ate it yesterday and i don't even recall a distinct black pepper flavor much less it being overwhelming. i got the pulled pork, i've not tried their ribs tho, in case that's what you're referring to.

I have not tried either of those, but will soon.

As to Fat Daddies, it has been a long time...maybe it was their ribs, but I typically don't eat ribs out except at places that are known for making good ribs. Pulled pork is easier to get at least decently good. My mom lives in London and she really likes the place, but the black pepper taste I remember was more than a bit distinctive as in it was about all I could taste.

It's actually the chef at the Hive in Bentonville who is up for Beard award. Weirdly enough, I'm not terribly impressed with the food at the Hive. I love the atmosphere. I love the menu. I just don't really love the food. I've been several times as well.

Don't get me wrong. The food is good, but I'm not totally floored by it.

Completely and absolutely agree.

Tusk & Trotter > the Hive.

4 new restaurants in or coming to Bentonville Square this year.

Damon's Tri-tip is really good BBQ but it's not typical and only open on Fridays.

BBQ is a regional cuisine, people usually like what they grew up with. I like Cotton Eyed Joe's in Noel, MO, but I never make it there. I like Whole Hog and Smokin Joe's in Bentonville, a and really hate McClard's in Hot Springs. My wife's (from Hot Springs) family and a ton of other people swear by MClard's. Meh.

I've never understood the love for McClard's.

Same with Rendezvous in Memphis. I like Corky's and interstate better.

I was born and raised in the Delta, so Memphis is practically my hometown, and I totally agree about the Rendezvous. I like it (their BBQ nachos and sausage plate are good), but I've always thought it was supremely overrated.

I know I've said this a million times, but it can't be understated -- people up here cannot. freaking. drive. Be it in snow, rain, or on a sunny day. It seems like I'm almost t-boned on weekly basis, and it's like stop signs are mere suggestions up here.

I love NWA, but that is one of the very few gripes about living up here. That and the fact that I get a bit rustled whenever I hear a non-Arkansan complaining about Arkansas, especially when you factor in the part where they're from some snowswept Rust Belt hellscape.

Yea, Interstate is better for sure.

As to that general assertion though, a lot of times it is the actual popularity of the place that makes it go down hill. Good BBQ takes time, no way to speed it up control exactly how long it takes. Once a place is too big or busy it HAS to be made differently and quality suffers. Arthur Bryant's in KC is my ultimate example, the first time I ate there it was a revelation and I didn't even get the burnt ends until my second visit. In the early 2000s it got worse with every subsequent visit, the last time I went it was as bad as something from Chili's...maybe worse. Place is still packed though so there is no reason for them to fix it and the honestly probably wouldn't know how anyway.

Obligatory offseason bump

The City of Little Rock completed their triumphant return to a #1 ranking this year. Announced late last week, Little Rock is once again ranked #1 in the most dangerous cities (under 200k) list. This comes after several years out of the top spot including a pathetic #5 ranking last year. Instead of doing things to decrease crime such as increase public school education, focus on economic development in places other than the River Market, or community development rather than ignoring those communities, Little Rock seems focused on embracing this trend. To fully embrace our #1 ranking, we came up with 5 ways Little Rock can celebrate the achievement.

5: Get out of jail free cards in community chest on Broadway.

4: Gang Banging in the Rock III documentary to headline Film Festival.

3: Back to school tax free weekend off stolen electronics.

2: Razorbacks add Ohio State game every year to War Memorial Stadium.

1: Downtown Parade led by grand marshall Jermain Taylor.

Yeah, tell me again how Little Rock is more dangerous than Memphis, Chicago, Detroit etc.

I'll hang up and listen.

Nice writeup in the New York Times about the Bentonville Film Festival and general Bentonville growth/culture.
