I do like golf! So i'll check it out. Is the course just that nice?

I also like horse racing. I saw that Oaklawn is near as well.

eta: How is DeGray Lake? I haven't heard/read much about it

God I hate moving. Military family so we used to pack up and move every couple of years, or, in the case of when we were stationed in DC (My dad was told this would be the place he would retire from) in six months.

That having been said... I would take Arkansas over the NE. People are more friendly down here. The winters aren't as harsh. The cost of living is not through the roof and the economy is booming right now. It is a move worth making.

With a bit of a drive you can make it down to BR. From Benton you can easily hit anywhere in Arkansas and make it up to Branson if you want to experience Vegas without the gambling, strippers, and entertainers who have been relevant in the last thirty years. Branson does look a lot nicer then Vegas though.

Right now Arkansas is probably the best place to settle down and start raising a family in the country. Its affordable, the economy is strong, and you can save up to move to where ever you want when you retire.

I hope you and your family love it here. We're glad to have you.

As to Oaklawn the live meet runs from about the end of January until mid-April and ends with the Arkansas Derby usually being open Fri-Sun and holidays. Otherwise it is open year round for simulcasting various tracks around the world as well as other types of gambling--not strictly casino gambling but they try to make it that way as much as they are permitted to. There's the Oaklawn Anywhere app that lets you watch races and bet from home or anywhere else for that matter. LINK

I've been to the Village many times--I think it is one of the largest gated residential communities in the country--but I'm not really a golfer so I'll let others speak to that.

Lake DeGray is nice including their lodge and state park there and I've stayed there and been on the lake just a few times but I'm by no means an expert on that lake. It's around Arkadelphia and is not too far away.

The Saline River runs through the county and has different forks if you like canoeing and kayaking and like so many rivers it can get kind of low in the summers. As you mentioned Lake Catherine, down below its dam (Remmel Dam) where the Ouachita River begins flowing again is a good stretch of water all the way down to the I-30 bridge in Rockport-Malvern. LINK You catch a real good current there when they are generating power which is frequent LINK so you have a good flow of water even in the dry months.

Courses are really nice. If you buy a cheap piece of property(500.00). Then you pay annual POA fees roughly 360.00. Or you can buy a players card. Same price as POA fees. Green fees with cart and tax are 32.00 anytime. Sat/holiday doesn't matter. Twilight fees are 15.00. Without card or land, green fees are 80.00. But there are 8 total course to choose from I think, but one of the courses is private. 30 minutes from Benton.

Welcome

If you're looking for a coffee spot, a buddy of mine owns the Speakeasy Coffee bar in Benton. LINK

Never been myself, but if it's anything like his other place Mugs in Argenta, it'll be great.

If you want to meet downtown to watch some lsu games in the fall your welcome to join my soon to be roommate and I. They have a really awesome pizza place. I think the name is Gusano's. They have a bunch of tv's and when my girlfriend and I went watch the Bama UGA game there they had fans from all different teams

Dude is a steal. Google tried to scoop him up, but they couldn't afford him. A real Arkansas state treasure.

There is growing food scene going on in Little Rock right now and we are all better for it.

I like the "Yellow Rocket" restaurant group :
-Zaza's Pizza
-Big Orange
-Local Lime

The Baja Grill in the Heights is also awesome for a quick lunch while hanging out downtown.

The breweries are doing well, you'll love Lost Forty Brewery and the new one, Rebel Kettle, is actually a lot of fun.

If you like cycling, awesome. If not, get in to it. Go to Spokes and get you and the wife a bike. On the weekends ride the River Trail, do a brewery tour by bike, ride from Twin Bridges out to Oinnacle, jump in one of the multitude of charity rides in the spring, summer, and fall.

If you're in to coffee, find a local roaster. You can get Leivas Coffee to get you fresh roasted beans, or you can pick up Onyx at the Green Store, roasted within 2 or 3 days, after you eat breakfast at the Root Cafe.

This town is much better than it was even 10 or 15 years ago.

Then you'll go to Northwest Arkansas and fall even more in love.

Just make it easy on yourself and become a hog fan. We are much cooler anyhow and it's much easier to root for the hogs than the Tigers

On are side note, if you're are golfer the via get is awesome, but don't buy a lot there. It ends up costing you more for the poa fees than if you just buy a membership. I haven't had one I a few years but it was something like 350 bucks for the year and you get everything with that you would if you were a property owner including beach and lake access. It's a great deal if you golf or have small kids because it's much less crowded and generally an older crowd at the lakes

Welcome to the best state in the western hemisphere
