I don't believe it's even that good. The only school with a worse pass defense than us is ITT Tech.

I am a fan of two teams. Arkansas has the better pass defense of the two.

That looks like the leaderboard I remember at the Cross Country Championships.

frick Jeff Long for being happy w/ just Top 10 finishes. Mediocrity abounds on the hill.

We stopped being competitive in cross country long before Jeff Long ever stepped foot on campus.

Yep.

I said this back during the Petrino era and during the 2012 and 2013 disasters -- if I'm an opposing head coach, regardless of my offensive philosophy, I'd line up 5 wide against us and throw it every down. I don't know why anyone would try to run on us when the middle and the deep ball are right there for the taking, and it's been that way for seemingly a decade.

The LSU game proved how terrible of a coach Miles really is. They kept trying to get Fournette going in the first half and had little success, and the second they get into 2 minute mode they start looking like the '07 Patriots. They come out in the second half and do the exact same thing and score another TD, and then they just stopped. It was mystifying. I kept telling myself "the jig is up, they've discovered they can pass" and they just stopped.

I hope LSU gives Miles one of those Scientology-like billion year contracts.

Thank God for the LSU game or we might be even lower.

This begs the question. is our problem coming from lack of pass rush or from poor secondary play? I think our lack of pass rush hurts us more than the position our secondary plays in. Overall I think our secondary players have been mediocre but when you combine that with no pass rush most of the time they'll eventually get beat by the receiver for big gains.

It's a combination of things.

Our pass rush sucks and we were at the bottom of the SEC in sacks before the LSU game. The Mississippi State game didn't exactly help our numbers, either.

We essentially have 1 SEC caliber linebacker -- Greenlaw -- and he's a true freshman on a learning curve. Brooks Ellis is smart and decent at run support but he doesn't have the athleticism to drop into pass coverage in the SEC, and Hackett and Eugene have been very underwhelming in their PT.

Also, our secondary has not played well this year, and our fundamentals have been terribly lacking and inconsistent from game to game in terms of tackling to playing the ball. Plus, we're relying on a former walk on (Richardson) and a true freshman (Pulley) at extremely difficult positions for inexperienced players.

It's all about improvement, we knew going into the season our D was going to take a major step back and be a real big issue.

The worrisome thing is that I don't see a whole lot of improvement in the back 7 beyond Dre. Our line has been okay, I can see improvement there, secondary? Not so much.

Offense all you see is improvement all over the place, but that group has a LOT more talent and a LOT more leadership and upperclassmen.

I still think Smith is a very good DC, he just needs some talent and time like anyone.I think people forget how bare that cupboard was on defense, way more so than on offense, especially in Year 2 for Smith.

I'd also argue that while everyone talks about the losses of Spaight, Flowers and Philon, the losses of Tevin Mitchel and Braylon Mitchell were vastly underrated as well. Both were seniors and had a ton of experience, and despite not being crazy talented, both were very athletic.

We've missed them more than I thought we would.

I'll agree with that.

Those boys from the first couple classes have got to start producing.

Bijohn hasn't done much. As much as I rag on Josh Frazier he'd probably be playing at Arkansas, but to hell w/ him.

Hackett and Eugene have barely given us anything.

Losing Josh Williams to a dirty play really hurt because he seemed to be coming on.

God did losing josh williams ever hurt. he was a guy who during the spring became an after thought to the staff, while they feverishly tried to make Khalia Hackett the man and that failed terribly. then he becomes a starter, then gets moved to a spot he would play limited but essential playing time. I have no doubt that he would have been the guy who would have given brooks a breather from time to time, but since he got injured brooks never comes out.
