Bert's original buyout
per Sporting News
OK it was bad, but at least it only ran through 2018.
But last February, Jeff Long "the wise", tore up that deal up and gave Bert this nugget.
fricking Les Miles had a cheaper buyout and he actually completed for AND WON nat'l titles!
Face it boys... It's not changing anytime soon... Better get used to a 7-5 and 6-6 ceiling...and the Independence Bowl... or maybe worse if recruiting doesn't improve.

Bielema’s buyout is 100 percent if terminated for convenience in the first three years, and drops from $9.6 million in 2016 to $3.2 million in the final year of his contract, 2018.

As illustrated by ArkansasFight.com, the contract's buyout terms are extremely friendly to Bielema, who would be owed $15.4 million if he's fired any time before 2018 and a minimum of $7.9 million if if he's fired any time before 2020. But Bielema would only owe Arkansas $4 million if he leaves in 2015 and would owe progressively less over the course of the contract down to only $500,000 on Jan. 1, 2019.

So basically we're stuck with him but he has the option to jet if a better job came calling for him (not that that's happening anytime soon after yesterday). Nice job, Jeff. That Texas Bowl and Liberty Bowl totally made him deserving of such assurances.

If we finish less than 8-4 this year, he's officially on the hotseat with me. If we finish 7-5 or worse, he better win at least 10 next year or I'm going to want him gone. If we wanted consistent 7-5 and 8-4 seasons, we could have kept Nutt for cheap.
It all comes down to an overall body of work and a trend. I don't care how we win games, as long as we do. If we win with 3 yards and a cloud of dust or with the run and shoot, it doesn't matter to me. All I know now is that the honeymoon is over.

I said at the time it was announced that I thought it was a profoundly stupid idea to have a one-sided buyout because it's basically lose-lose for the U of A. If he's bad, you can't afford to fire him, and if he's good (lol) there's little to stop him from jumping to another school. What's even worse is that we gave him that contract after a 6-6 season, at which point he was 9-15, 2-14 in the SEC.
Like I said in another thread, we are the clingy girlfriend of the SEC when it comes to coaches. If you have even a modicum of success here, we'll give you a blank check, an eleventy trillion dollar buyout, two year passes, and anoint you king of Arkansas.

Good luck with that.
We lose all of our WRs except for Cornelius. Lose Sprinkle and Skipper.
We lose Wise, Ledbetter, Ellis, Collins, Dean, Johnson, Winston off the two deep on defense.
We return 4/5 starters on the OL, but at this point I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.
Plus, we play Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU all on the road.

And we play 10 straight games to close out the season. That's no excuse for a 56-3 loss, but that is hard as hell on the players, especially with the aforementioned road schedule.

So...maybe my expectations are too low. If we compete hard and lose to teams like Bama or Albarn...I can accept that. They are very good teams.
The key is...competing hard and being respected...and getting some of the wins at times, which will happen if we are competitive.
We aren't competitive now. 56-3 is a total joke. There's no sugar coating it. Frankly...Bama beat us down almost as bad as did A&M. Florida can't wait. LSU has plenty of reasons to bring it. I even worry about Starkville if he's lost the team as it appears he may have.
As in many things...thank God for Mississippi.
All that said....I'll be hoping they pull it together on the Bye week and come out swinging against FL. Sad fact is...these kids know enough football to realize that our lines are getting demolished by any team with any type of line play (both sides)...and they realize that can't just be 'fixed'.

I can accept an "off" game here and there.... 56-3 to a mid tier team is TOTALLY unacceptable..... not being able to stop the run when you KNOW it's coming is scheme.... and ours is total crap at the moment. Our linebackers consistently play out of position. Our d line simply doesn't make plays....
Honestly I think our safeties are decent players but they get exposed so friggin bad because we have no identity with our front 7.

They're definitely better than mid tier. Something has changed since the LSU game. But there's no way that team should have throttled us by three times as much as Alabama.

I will concede that... they were better than I gave them credit for.... but 56-3......... frick no!!!!

Not saying it's a realistic expectation to win 10 next year given all that we lose, but if we only win 7 this season, he has to win 10 next year for me to believe he will be a sustained part of the program.

What was Petrino's buyout?
How much did Arkansas pay?
Clauses in the contract Long knows you can't honor are a bitch for those with the contract...

To be fair, Petrino was fired for doing something illegal, which is different than us just saying "meh, you're not coaching well". I don't see Bert getting fired for off-the-field issues.

Long knew he was a repeat offender of his morality clause in his contract before Dorrell was hired.
Of course he wasn't going to fire him at that time.

Its nothing scandalous.

I don't claim to be a program insider, so it's entirely possible (and probable) that I don't know much more than what I see in the news. I spend half the year underwater and I live across the globe.
The timing for Petrino's firing seems like it had everything to do with the fact that the motorcycle accident and Dorrell's hiring became public. If there were other violations of the morality clause, I am unaware of them, and I think the public is mostly unaware of them as well. I wouldn't blame Long for trying to deal with it in house, but once it becomes public, it's out of his hands IMO. The team was ranked 8th in the preseason that year, and the schedule was favorable. I think if Petrino stays, that team wins at least 9, if not more.
Bert seems like a guy who's faults are on display publically (i.e. looks like he's a overgrown frat boy who enjoys the party scene too much). As far as I know, there doesn't seem to be enough to fire Bert now. And even if there was, I'm sure people will start asking questions if we fire Bert without having to pay his buyout.
But again, I don't know and I'm not a program insider.

very few people are a "program insider" and I wouldn't consider myself that either.
But when something big breaks, I usually get 24-48 hours notice. Nothing big has been happening as far as I know.
Bret does like his drinking a bit much, as many say.... But thus far, nothing that is scandalous as said above.
I would like for CBB to get healthy in mind, and physically. I believe he would have more success. But who am I to argue. He is super successful financially, and life wise overall. I am rooting for him big time. But I am now a bit perplexed. His talking hasn't matched his record at all.

I don't think Long or anyone else expected him to hire what turned out to be his girlfriend when he had known side chicks...
