Command and Control

quote:

Command and Control focuses on one particular little office oopsie: a worker who dropped a wrench socket in September of 1980. Unfortunately, that socket was inside a Titan II silo along with a nuclear missile. Even more unfortunately, the socket hit the fuel line on the way down. That caused a rocket fuel explosion that blew up the missile, kililng one person and injuring 21 more while reducing the entire facility to a smoking hole in the ground.

Sid King from KGFL/KHPQ radio in Clinton AR has some awesome stories about this. One I remember most was him and another guy were flying around the area in a little Cesna to cover the event. They were eventually forced out of the area from a few military fighter jets.

I remember a friend of Mom and Dads who was a ASP officer. He knocked on our door in the middle of the night and told us to get out of the area immediately. I remember going to his house north of Clinton until the all clear was given. Scared the shite out of me as a little boy.

Maybe, maybe not. It moved us many miles away from the silo though. It also put several mountains between us, in case there were more or larger explosions. More importantly it took us out of the typical wind patterns that could possibly drop nuclear fallout on the family. That's how my parents explained it at least. Hell maybe that's my problem. Thanks mom and dad.

Insane how big these bomb got in such a short period of time.

Was reading that one of these bombs, either the Demascus or NC one was bigger than all explosives EVER detonated on the planet combined and had a 17 square mile 100% kill zone.

Dear god.
