n other Arkansas coaching news, strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert has received a two-year extension through June 30, 2020.
Herbert, whose salary jumped by $10,000 per year to $350,000 on Jan. 1, will receive built-in raises of $10,000 in 2018 and 2019. Herbert signed the extension on Dec. 13, 2016.
Herbert, tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr. and receivers coach Michael Smith have been on Bielema’s staff through each of his four seasons.

Some are gonna be pissed about this.

Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos has received a raise to $800,000 for 2017 and a contract extension with automatic salary escalators for the next two seasons.
Enos, 48, signed the amendment to his contract, which the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette received through a public records request, on Jan. 5.
The new deal will pay him $850,000 in 2018 and $900,000 in 2019.
Enos’ salary had originally been scheduled to increase to $750,000, a raise of $50,000, on Jan. 1. He had reportedly drawn interest from at least one other school and possibly NFL teams.

quote:

Enos’ buyout is $350,000 through Feb. 15, 2018, and then it decreases to $250,000 from Feb. 16, 2018 through Feb. 15, 2020.
After that, the buyout drops to $100,000 through June 30, 2020, the end of his contract term.

We also waived the 250k buyout for Smith and let him walk.

I know the players love Herbert and he seems like a high intensity ra-ra-ra type guy and all... but our S&C has been very lackluster under him.

Even against much smaller lines we've had problems generating a push at the line of scrimmage and the team as a whole has shown a marked tendency to run out of gas in the 4th quarter despite our crawl ball style of play.

On the bright side maybe this raise comes with the responsibility of showing up after halftime.

All of this.

I've been outspoken in my gripes about Herbert since midway through the season, and I'm surprised he's getting such a pass from our fan base. It seems like every year in the Bielema era we've had difficulty matching up physically with an inferior opponent early in the season (Samford, Toledo, Louisiana Tech) and have had to play our way into shape. Also, two of the last three years we've seen our team flat run out of gas in the second half of games. We're slow, we're soft, we're not physical, we have no team speed, and we can't get a push on the offensive line or manufacture a pass rush on the defensive line.

The "freaks come out" videos are nice and all, but they mean jack shite when it comes to on-field results. I'd proffer that S&C is arguably our biggest program weakness (no pun intended) right now.

I agree with Feral regarding S&C. I remember Veltkamp being relatively successful while we were here.

Interestingly enough, the S&C coach is probably one of the most important people on the coaching staff. He's one of the few that's allowed year round access to players. It's important that players show up to the beginning of the season in shape, strong, fit, and healthy, since the grind of the season will wear them down based on the intense practice schedule, need for recovery, and the lack of time to focus on training and conditioning. Also, based on the limited amount of practice time, the S&C coach is responsible for implementing an efficient system utilizing the limited practice time available for players to keep them in shape.

Incidentally, if you're interested in the subject of effective athletic programming, go read stuff by Dan John. He's a strength coach who's noted for his effectiveness in outlining the underlying principles for athletic performance, and is known for training strength athletes (i.e. discus throwers, rugby players, football players, etc.)

Insightful points DG.

In a way the Herb training reminds me of the old golf saying "Drive for show, putt for dough". A big spectacle but when it comes to crunch time we tend not to deliver.

Its the being blown up in the second half that most concerns me. With our crawl ball style our defense should be better able then most to still have something in the tank late in the game.

Everyone but us and LSU are going up tempo in the West and I'd wager a good chunk of our OOC opponents will as well. If our conditioning does not improve we are likely to see a lot of late game collapses next season as well.

FWIW, CBB has acknowledged that changes need to be made in their training regimen and they're planning on addressing that. I think Herbert is knowledgeable enough that he can still be good if they make some slight adjustments to their workouts.
