Did the aTm/Bama game change anyone's opinion on offense?

We saw that an offensive/spread/dual threat QB can win the SEC just a couple years ago with Cam. A lot of people seem to forget that year.
I saw Alabama on defense more tired and more confused than ever. Saban himself looked confused. He couldn't dial up anything to slow Johnny down.
My opinion may have been swayed a bit after yesterday. I think a fast paced offense can win in this league. You don't have to have an extraordinary defense. Alabama and LSU are always going to be handicapped on that side of the ball.
Gundy and Patterson can do that here.
Your thoughts?
Petrino had a good offense and a good mind. It just wasn't fast pace and had a normal pocket QB. Big difference.

Auburn won a BCSNC with an offensive oriented team.

They did. Which is why I'm inclined to think having a great defense to win this league is a myth.
Fast paced offense with a good line and a couple good WRs can win this league.
Oregon would whip any team in our conference this year.

Those offenses are certainly capable of winning in the SEC, the bigger challenge is winning the bowl game when the opponent has 4 weeks to prepare.

Hawgeye how confident are you that Gundy would come here?

In the end, players win and lose. aTm has a top notch oline and a freak show qb. I think scheme can be a bit overrated sometimes. Offense A and can be just as good as offense B if executed properly. Id be fine with anything as long as whoever is coaching recruits winners who are able to excel in whatever style they are using.

Telling you my confidence in what someone else will do is a bit of a gamble. I can only tell you guys what I hear. I really trust some folks and some folks I dont.
I would have told you 3 weeks ago that America would have voted to get Obama out of office. Then a storm happened and he was in the media every day with that.
From everything I have heard, he wants this job.
Thats really all I can tell you.

I agree and I think with the change in the BCS coming up in another year, that will negate itself as you will play a semifinal game and then the next week play a championship game.
So, if the team is in a position to win the big title, the opposition of the 2nd game isnt going to have that long to prepare.

You need an outstanding athlete at QB, ala Tim Tebow, Cam and Manziel to run it. Its not a plug and play type system like Saban. Those QB's have a bad day then they dont have a very good chance of winning. JMO.

From Arkansas' point of view, having to play Bama with Saban there as the opening SEC game, second game of the year, then second SEC game third game of the year, has been far more hampering than the defense/offense argument...
It didn't hurt aTm that Bama played LSU last week either...

I think offense can win the league as well.
I also think that whipping TCU took last night sealed the deal for Patterson.

Only so much Patterson can do right now there.
It's not like he knew two years in advance he was going to a tougher league so he could recruit for it. That team is made of guys to win at a lower a tad bit less than the conference they are in.
To me though, this year has been his best coaching job.

His team would be competitive for what he was recruiting for, talent and depth wise, the MWC.
Just look at WVU, they would probably be dominating the Big East right now...
Mizzou would likely be more competitive in the big12 than they are in the SEC, aTm was recruiting well with Sherman, not sure how they would be doing with him in either conference right now.

Yep. West Va was ranked in the top 5 earlier when they were playing teams with the same talent level and their scheme worked. The struggles started with Baylor and they've now lost what, five of their last six?

the thing is IMO the alabama pro-style/defensive philosophy is more consistent, more prolonged winning. sure a cam newton or johnny frickin football can come along once in awhile and throw a monkey wrench in the consistency because of that particular player being the 'X' factor. but those players come along once in a blue moon.
eta: if it wasnt for cam or JFF their team would be a shadow of what they were, and ATM sure as hell wouldnt of won yesterday

Oregon seems to be able to do it consistently, even this year with a true freshmen at QB...

That is what I was thinking earlier today. Masoli, Thomas, Marriotta(sp) and back a few more years wasn't there a Heisman contender named Dixon?
