Gravy, the official podcast of the Southern Foodways Alliance, recently explored the history of cheesedip which most Arkansans will know from marketing alone. You can find it on iTunes, SoundCloud, or just the website.

I could really go for some cheese dip right now...

There’s a dish you’ll find at every kind of restaurant in Little Rock, from the pizza places to the burger joints: cheese dip. How did it become so beloved in Arkansas? And what does it reveal about the state’s past—and present? In this episode of Gravy, Dana Bialek and I investigate this story of highways, demographic changes, and a food’s shifting identity over time.
You can find Kat Robinson’s website—and her write-up of last fall’s 5th Annual World Cheese Dip Championship—here.
Here’re some of the restaurants we visited in Little Rock, in order of appearance in the episode:
Mexico Chiquito, Trio’s Restaurant, Lost 40 Brewing (one of Scott McGeehee’s Yellow Rocket Concepts restaurants), and Fonda Mexican Cuisine and Tequila Bar.
Arkansas’ Tourism Bureau has conveniently put together a “Cheese Dip Trail,” which you can find here. LINK
And, of course, a passionate Arkansan (named Nick Rogers) made a film about cheese dip, called In Queso Fever.
I could really go for some cheese dip right now...

I might suggest the "cheese dip" at The Butcher Shop. Its base is our Alfredo and a cheese blend with some peppers and onion. Chicken or Shrimp can be added.
One our line cooks who is Mexican came up with it. Everybody I talk to loves it...called Ariel Dip and named after said cook.

The Shrimp one was an absolute homerun... Yummy!

Up where I live in the northeast, cheese dip isn't even an afterthought. At the one Mexican restaurant in my little town, it's not even on the menu. It's infuriating.

He means northeast USA. I lived in New York a while and they don't know what cheese dip is unless it's in a jar.

I would have a hard time with this as well.
